Description:
SPA seeks candidates for the position of Upper School Studio Art Teacher beginning in August 2023. This is a full-time, ongoing position within the Upper School Art Department. The role includes teaching beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses in drawing, painting, and printmaking. A capstone workshop course in 2D art, which emphasizes the development and exhibition of a portfolio, is part of the teaching assignment. In addition, this teacher will collaborate with the rest of the art department in the continual development and implementation of curriculum, and help to curate and manage the on-campus Drake Gallery and the SPA art collection. All US teachers also serve as an advisor for 8-10 Upper School students.
Required:
- Candidates should possess at least a bachelor's degree in fine arts or a related field (a master's degree is preferred) and should have experience working with high school students.
- As importantly, we seek candidates who are committed to developing and practicing cultural competence in their teaching and able to operate effectively in diverse environments while also interacting successfully with people from widely varying backgrounds.
- Establish a supportive and engaging classroom environment for students;
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and parents/guardians;
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, students, and families;
- Advise students effectively and otherwise contribute to the life of the school outside the classroom
- Candidates should support the mission of SPA, the vision of the Upper School, and be eager to join a professional community where openness to growth is the norm.
- A collaborative style and approachable demeanor, and demonstrated ability to establish rapport and trusting relationships with people from diverse identities and cultural backgrounds.
- Effective cross-cultural communication skills. Able to operate effectively in diverse environments and interact successfully with people from widely varying backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including ability to interact with employees at all levels in a friendly and professional manner
