Founded in 1786, Friends Seminary, the oldest continually operating coeducational, independent Quaker school in New York City, seeks a highly experienced and committed educator to be a leader of faculty programs and support, K-12. Friends has well established programs for orientation, mentorship, evaluation, professional development and growth support. The importance of these programs is evidenced by the School’s financial commitment to the continued growth and development of its faculty. This position is a new administrative role for the School and is intended to enhance the focused support and nurturing of faculty across a wide range of disciplines and grade levels. The successful candidate will have well developed beliefs about teaching and learning that align with the Friends Seminary mission and strategic plan, as well as experience leading and coaching faculty in formal growth and support programs. This is a singular opportunity for a collaborative, growth-minded, innovative educator.
All programs are housed on the newly constructed and renovated 16th street campus with many spaces and faculty shared across the full K-12 age range. Academic and co-curricular programs prioritize meaningful learning in the context of Quaker values. Friends students are asked to ‘engage in the world that is and to help bring about a world that ought to be’. The Dean’s primary responsibility will be to lead and support faculty in aspirational work towards this vision.
Unique Programs
- Mandarin and Arabic languages taught from grades 5-12, along with Latin, Spanish, Greek and French
- Center for Peace, Equity and Justice (CPEJ) staffed by four practitioners
- Academic Center for students in grades 7-12 who seek remedial or supplemental academic support before, during and after school
- Senior art seminar
- Global Education trips to countries such as Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Nepal and Spain
- Collaborative relationships with several professional off-Broadway theaters
- Online course offerings in subjects such as American Sign Language and psychology
- Relationship with New York University whereby seniors may take certain classes not offered at Friends at no cost
- Annual Scholar/Artist in Residence
- An innovative schedule that allows Upper School students to have 70 minute classes that meet every other day, Middle and Upper School students to have community time everyday, and collaborative periods several times per week for MS and US students and faculty, among other things

Responsibilities
- Lead and continue to develop inspiring faculty programs for professional growth, professional development, new teacher orientation and mentoring
- Devise and implement new offerings for faculty coaching and in-house professional development
- Collaborate with the Director of Diversity, Equity & Belonging to ensure robust recruitment and retention of new and continuing faculty of color as well as initiatives to increase the diversity and inclusivity of the curriculum
- Collaborate with the Director of Educational Technology to guide the development of faculty skills and guidelines for use of academic technology
- Collaborate with the Director of CPEJ to weave global perspectives, global issues and global competencies into the curriculum
- Lead continued development of interdisciplinary courses and collaboration in all subject areas, but most immediately in math, science, creative computing and engineering
- Clerk bi-weekly meeting of Academic Department Chairs with agendas focused on managing all aspects of the academic program including, but not limited to, continued innovation in course offerings, academic policies, interdisciplinary collaborations, enrollment and scheduling, grading policies, and departmental curriculum initiatives
- Collaborate with division heads to support and inspire excellence in teaching and learning within each division
- Collaborate with department chairs to support and inspire aspirational individual faculty and departmental performance and growth
- Participate in faculty hiring responsibilities including recruitment events, interviewing and participation on hiring committees
- Report to and work closely with the Associate Head of School
- Teach one section in an area of expertise
- Advise a student group in either Middle or Upper School
- Oversee student and faculty class scheduling as well as the daily schedule
- Other duties, as needed, associated with the academic and programmatic mission of the School
Qualifications
- Committed and experienced educator with classroom experience in K-12 settings and an understanding of and love for grades K-12 teaching and learning
- Significant experience or professional expertise in the art and science of giving feedback: evaluation, coaching, mentoring, peer-to-peer learning, observations, lesson creation, etc.
- Commitment to and belief in the ability of all students and teachers to learn and grow, in addition to a commitment to the idea of supporting multiple learning styles
- Experience in school leadership
- Excellent interpersonal skills, highly developed spoken and written communication abilities, and solid, proven organizational skills
- Commitment to and enthusiasm for initiatives that will further the Diversity, Equity and Belonging mission of the School
- Creativity and experience in promoting innovation in pedagogy, assessment, curriculum and use of educational technology
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience required
Compensation
Annual salary range based on years of experience and level of degrees earned: $150,000.00–$250,000.00
