Reports to: Young Writers Camp Program Director

Summary

The YWC Instructor will be responsible for supporting the YWC Director in the successful operation of the program by teaching assigned classes and leading activities as scheduled. 

Responsibilities and Duties

• Curriculum development and implementation in assigned areas.
• Organization of two-week daily lesson plans.
• Work with other faculty to focus content and subject areas.
• Assist with the development and implementation of extracurricular activities.
• Assist students with writing assignments.
• Supervise some meals.
• Supervise trips and evening activities as scheduled.
• Supervise dormitory and facilitate dormitory services as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Environment: Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments where the noise level ranges from quiet to moderately loud. These environments will vary.
• Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; climb stairs ; must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities such as hiking, swimming, team building initiatives, building campfires, and physical games and activities; to travel in all modes of transportation; sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate equipment has needed; and to verbally communicate to exchange information with both English-speaking and non-English speaking contacts.
• Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
• Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. 

Minimum Requirements:

• Prior teaching experience with middle school and high school students.
• Familiarity with instructional methods in writing.
• Knowledge of several or all of the following forms of writing:
• short fiction
• creative non-fiction
• poetry
• biography
• nature
• travel
• Great attitude and ability to work with children in building self-esteem and self-confidence.
• Ingenuity and inventiveness, capable of thinking on one’s feet, and adapting to changes in scheduling.
• Maturity of judgment and character.
• Degree in writing, journalism, communications, English; or equivalent work experience.
• CPR Certified by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
• Must possess a valid US driver’s license and a clean driving history.
• Must pass all background clearances.
