Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle, is currently recruiting for a director of community safety. The Director of Community Safety will be a member of the school leadership team. They will be responsible for coordinating and supervising the work of community safety on the three Lakeside School campuses in Seattle (two in North Seattle and The Downtown School in Seattle Center), and will be in charge of security services for all students, employees, and guests. Reporting to the Head of School, the Director of Community Safety is a full time, exempt position with a compensation range of $90,000 - $125,000 based on experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manage, coordinate, and supervise the work of third party and/or on-staff community safety officers.
- Oversee and implement campus safety assessment.
- Ensure necessary training and certifications are conducted and maintained.
- Develop and implement emergency management and security programs, services, and emergency preparedness initiatives.
- Respond to security and emergency situations on campus.
- Assist in investigations and complete incident reports, as needed.
- Ensure that all visitors to campus have proper identification and approval.
- Work with community members to prevent theft and fraud.
- Conduct safety trainings for students and employees.
- Assist with fire, building evacuation, shelter-in-place, earthquake, and lockdown drills.
- Use software and security technology to monitor campus activity.
- Patrol assigned area on foot and/or in a vehicle to ensure safety and security of students, employees, and visitors.
- Provide hospitality information, directions, parking, and escort service as needed.
- Assist with scheduling and administering special event parking and traffic control and safety.
- Inform and warn individuals who are in violation of school rules and/or city regulations.
- Advise the head of school on all security and safety matters.
- Develop and foster community relations with the police department, fire department, youth offices, and other law enforcement agencies in Seattle.
Requirements and Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to perform the essential duties of this job.
- At least five years experience in a supervisory capacity in a security or public safety organization
- Excellent management, communication, and public relations skills.
- Ability to manage departmental budget.
- Demonstrated ability to use software and security technology.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students (ages 10-18), teachers, administrators, fellow employees, parents and guardians, alumni, trustees, and independent contractors.
- Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. Candidates will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people who have had different cultural frameworks.
- Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel in a timely and effective manner.
- Ability to quickly assess a situation and have an excellent sense of judgment.
- Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports concerning safety and security issues.
- Ability to resolve complaints and concerns and/or refer complainants to appropriate school personnel.
- Ability to work with others and independently.
- Ability to work extended hours, as needed.
- Familiarity with protocols for communication and working with local, state, and federal law enforcement, life safety, environmental, and public health agencies.
- Candidates must satisfactorily complete three criminal background checks.

- Must ascend and descend stairs.
- Must be able to stand or walk for at least two hours without rest.
- As work is mostly outside, must be able to tolerate and perform duties in extreme, as well as normal, weather conditions. The employee may be occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
- Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.
