Paideia is an independent, progressive  pre-K through 12 college-preparatory school in the Emory University area of Atlanta. The high school enrolls approximately 465 students. The curriculum consists of extensive offerings in English, social sciences, mathematics, foreign languages, natural and physical sciences, art, and music. Class size averages 15 students.

Full-time high school teachers teach four classes.  The social studies department offers a full range of courses including Topics in World History in 9^th Grade, American History in 10^th grade, and elective courses in the 11^th and 12^th grades.  Elective courses cover a wide breadth and depth of topics, such as Globalism; Democracy & Dictatorship; Nationalism & Identity; Relations, Religions, & Resistance: India; and Anatomy of a Revolution.

This position would include teaching sections of  10th grade American History or 9th grade Topics in World History along with developing elective courses within the department for 11th and 12th graders as well as for our elective classes during our Short Terms (in January and May). Ideally, candidates would have experience in developing upper-level courses on the Western and non-Western world. Other responsibilities include academic advising of 10-12 students and weekly faculty meetings. Faculty may also choose to act as a club or student activity sponsor or coach a sports team.

Required Skills / Abilities:

We are looking for someone who has a strong social studies or history background, practice with a variety of instruction methods, and minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience. While a college degree in a related field is required, a master’s is preferred.  Important personal qualities include a love of learning, interest in and demonstrated ability to teach and support adolescents, an engaging teaching style, flexibility, organizational skill, energy, collegiality, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues especially in teaching the 10th-grade American History and or 9th grade Topics in World History.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In addition to teaching responsibilities in both long terms and short terms, faculty have an advisory group of 10-12 students. Faculty members are required to attend weekly faculty meetings, participate in professional development training, support student programming days and events, and a list of things that can come up in the day in the life of a teacher.

About The Paideia School

Paideia is a K-12 college preparatory school of 999 students in the Emory University area of Atlanta; the elementary school enrolls 333 students. The elementary program includes twelve full-day, self-contained classrooms grades K-6. There are two teachers in each class of twenty-six to twenty-eight children. Teachers work together as lead teacher and assistant or as two co-lead teachers.
