Friends Community School seeks an Interim Head of School to start July 1, 2023
Friends Community School (FCS) is seeking a two-year Interim Head of School beginning July 1, 2023. Currently, FCS is in a strong, stable position with full enrollment of 250 students, an experienced and collaborative faculty and staff, and an effective and engaged Board of Trustees. We seek an experienced educational leader to guide the school over the next two years with attention to Quaker values and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
FCS is an independent, coeducational day school offering Quaker progressive education for students in kindergarten through grade eight. Founded in 1986 by members of the Adelphi Friends Meeting, FCS is located in a LEED Silver-certified building on 17 acres adjacent to Greenbelt National Park in College Park, Maryland, and draws families from a wide swath of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The School offers a rigorous curriculum rooted in its Quaker heritage that imbues the values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and environmental stewardship. FCS’s educational approach emphasizes hands-on experience through activities, field trips, projects, and collaborations that provide opportunities for decision-making, individual responsibility, and leadership. The FCS mission, “To nurture young people to be lifelong learners, courageous risk takers, and joyous peacemakers; to discover that of God within themselves and others, and to reach their fullest potential as individuals and as contributing members of society” is understood, embraced, and celebrated throughout the school community.
Friends Community School is committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive educational community. Our school welcomes and affirms diversity in all of its many dimensions guided by the Quaker belief that there is that of God in every person. We actively seek students, families, faculty, and staff of varied backgrounds and encourage them to share their unique gifts to cultivate a rich educational experience. We strive to create a learning environment that exposes students to the value and breadth of differences, informs their perspectives, and prepares them to shape the world.
Qualified candidates are asked to send a resumé, cover letter, a one- to two-page educational philosophy statement, and a list of five professional references with name, phone number, and email address of each to Search Committee Clerk Brooke Carroll at brooke@aciesstrategies.com no later than January 30, 2023 (however, review of applications and interviews will begin immediately). Although references are requested with application materials, the search committee will not contact references without first informing the candidate and receiving their permission.
