Houston Christian High School (HC) is accepting applications for the position of Technical Theatre Instructor to begin in August 2022. This position reports to the Performing Arts Department Chair and Principal and works in collaboration with other Performing Arts Teachers and Faculty. This is a part-time, exempt position.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree, in Theatre or related field.
- Fundamental knowledge of all aspects of technical theatre.
- Working knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures of theatre, dance, and music productions and presentations.
- Classroom teaching experience is beneficial.
- Proficient in basic technology applications, electronic grade book and curricular software and hardware) (i.e. MS Word, Excel). Google Apps knowledge is beneficial (i.e. Google Drive, Google Docs, Gmail).
- Excellent verbal, visual, written, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Represent the school in a positive light.

The Technical Theatre Instructor, under the direction of the Performing Arts Department Chair and Principal, is responsible to support all HC Theatrical Productions, Music, and Dance Concerts and teach two technical theatre classes.

Qualified candidates must be skilled and have a passion to provide classroom instruction. Effective organizational and presentation skills are necessary. Candidates should also possess excellent communication skills, a willingness to mentor students and the ability to incorporate 21st Century Skills into the curriculum. The successful candidate will be energetic and creative and possess a vision for excellence in academics at the high school level, a strong work ethic, and a desire to achieve success. Contribution to the life of the school outside the classroom is expected. Occasional after school, evening or weekend hours will be necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES and EXPECTATIONS:
- Mentor and provide leadership for student designers.
- Responsible for all technical theater operations for the Performing Arts Department.
- Must be able to teach technical theatre basics in stage management, computerized lighting systems, stage carpentry, sound engineering, stage projections, properties, costumes, make-up, and appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
- Determines the necessary technical supports and special needs necessary for events and performances presented in advance of production dates.
- Advises director, lighting, and sound designers, on the technical specifications, costs, and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs.
- Supervises and implements set and stage construction and management.
- Assists in recruiting, training, and assignment of volunteer or paid technical staff for individual shows and management of said technical consultants.
- Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Assists with the preparation and control of production budgets in regards to the technical aspects; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies.
- Attends all production meetings for theatre, music, and dance productions.
- Maintain a clean and organized technical theater shop.
- Coordinate the move of any technical elements to and from HBU (or any other off-campus facility) for the winter musical.
- If nominated for Tommy Tune Best Musical, assist in any technical aspects that are required.
- Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair, Principal, or Head of School.
