The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator to serve as the inaugural Director of the Hayot Center of Innovation (HCI).

Job Overview:
Chapin aspires to be a leader in educating young women to be thinkers, creators and makers. To that end, our recently completed Hayot Center for Innovation (HCI) is an expansive Makerspace and Engineering facility in service to Chapin's vision of K-12 innovation, design, and learning. The space includes a wide variety of traditional and digital fabrication tools, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC tools, and microprocessor boards.
The HCI is also home to Upper School Engineering and Fab Lab classes and after school Middle and Upper School robotics programs.
This full-time, 12-month position reports to the Associate Head of School. This person will work collaboratively with: the Director of Academic Technology and the Academic Technology Team, the Director of Auxiliary Programs, and Department Heads on programming and the procurement of technology tools during the academic year and summer session. The HCI Director will report to the Chief Financial and Operations Officer with regards to budget.

Passionate about working with others and thinking outside the box. This person is experienced in projet-based learning and will be thrilled to bring design thinking and building to all areas of the curriculum who:
- Facilitates workshops and trainings for faculty and students in areas including, but not limited to: making, tinkering, innovation, problem-based learning, design thinking, and rapid prototyping;
- Assists faculty in researching, developing, and prototyping innovative maker projects to incorporate into current curriculum;
- Brings genuine excitement for and ability to work with students, faculty, staff, and parents;
- Has a well-developed sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members.
An educator who has the skills to safely organize, maintain, and operate a diverse space whose primary purpose is to facilitate hands-on learning by:
- Developing safety protocols and best practices related to the tools in the makerspace;
- Training and supporting a student cohort to become peer support specialists on machine troubleshooting and maintenance;
- Sharing experience with 3D printers, Soldering, Laser Cutter, CNC milling, Arduino or other programming/coding experience, Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc), Sewing/Embroidery machine, etc;
- Demonstrating excellent organizational and project management skills, including the ability to work on multiple projects, with competing priorities, to completion;
- Maintaining a safe facility and is responsible for maintenance, upkeep, and enhancement of the Makerspace;
- Keeping an accurate inventory of materials, orders supplies and manages an annual budget.

- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and parents;

Required
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum 2 years experience in STEAM focused program design, planning, execution
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues
- Experience with makerspace technology and tools
Preferred
- Masters degree in related educational technology field or equivalent professional experience in a fabrication shop, architectural/design studio, or similar
- 2+ years experience working/leading in a similar design/build space

UNDER ONE ROOF
Chapin’s single building provides a unified learning environment under one roof for all students, the 128 faculty members who teach them and the 85 staff members who support all other aspects of school life. An ambitious construction project to be completed in 2020 will feature an entire floor dedicated to the arts and a gymnasium with suspended running track—all with spectacular views of our urban location. The Hayot Center for Innovation, to open in 2020, will provide our entire learning community the opportunity to extend our commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry-based investigations and explorations, deepening students’ interests through experimentation, invention and the development of out-of-the-box solutions to complex issues.
