Job Description
At Avenues, the equivalent of our social studies program in the upper division (grades 6-12) is called the World Course. Depending on a number of variables including candidate interest, this position may be specifically allocated to the middle (6-9) or upper (10-12) grades.
World Course draws on the disciplines of history and the social sciences to help students understand the challenges and opportunities of the world around them--and the context for those challenges. It is uniquely focused on preparing future leaders to tackle global-scale problems. A core academic program at Avenues, the World Course asks students to understand the world through a variety of lenses. Students examine the cultures, behaviors, successes, and conflicts among and between people, and explore the root causes and results of human interactions with other humans, with ideas, and with the environment.
World Course teachers guide students to become informed, skilled, and empathetic agents of change. Through a range of approaches--including historical thinking skills, design thinking, and project-based work across multiple disciplines--we equip students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to make a difference in the world.
More broadly, all teachers at Avenues:
- ensure students achieve key learning outcomes by targeting instruction to address individual student needs
- collaboratively plan discipline-based and interdisciplinary units and projects using backwards design frameworks, such as Understanding by Design
- co-construct with students a classroom environment that establishes high standards, fosters a sense of belonging, and upholds our founding values of welcome, safety, and respect
- practice cultural competence in the classroom and workplace
- inspire trust and confidence among guardians and families through regular, proactive communication
- contribute to the broader community of our NYC campus and global network
