St. Luke’s School, a secular, college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12 in New Canaan, CT, seeks a full-time Choir/Vocal Music teacher to teach both Middle and Upper School students beginning in the 2023-24 school year. The successful candidate will be a creative, energetic musician who is eager to apply their strengths to building a dynamic music program. Our ideal candidate will be a skilled recruiter and motivator of students, a flexible and creative problem solver, and an eager collaborator.
Our music program is a huge draw for students, with approximately 50% of the student body participating. You will have the opportunity to join a team of experienced, passionate colleagues who create a variety of unique opportunities that leverage both their own and their students’ musical interests. The Vocal Music program at St. Luke’s presently consists of grade-level-defined Middle School Choirs and an Upper School Chorale, all of which meet during the regular class rotation schedule. Occasionally we have also had student-led a cappella groups that rehearse outside of scheduled class times. This opening represents an exciting opportunity for a creative and strategic thinker to contribute fresh perspective and approaches to the design of a fulfilling, relevant, and developmentally appropriate school-wide music program.
St. Luke’s is also seeking a new Music Department Chair, and while not a requirement for this Choir/Vocal Music teacher opening, candidates who wish to be considered for that additional role and responsibility are invited to express interest.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Teach four or five Choir courses across Middle and Upper School.
- Collaborate with department colleagues, school personnel, parents, and various community agencies for the purpose of planning curriculum, securing performance opportunities, and developing an exceptional student experience.
- Participate in three seasons of an after-school activity, including serving as Music Director for either the Middle or Upper School musical show during the winter season.
- Serve as co-advisor for a group of 6 to 8 students.
- Assist with customary supervisory duties, such as study hall proctoring, lunchroom supervision, or chaperoning events.
Key Skills and Qualities:
- An exceptional recruiter and relationship-builder who loves working with students of all ages, ability levels, and musical interests
- An inspiring, collaborative teacher who combines clearly articulated vocal pedagogy with well-honed classroom management skills
- High degree of piano proficiency, capable of providing consistent rehearsal accompaniment (outside of performances)
- Effective use of technology platforms, especially Google Workspace for Education, and ideally working in a 1:1 teaching environment
- Strong cultural competency skills, with demonstrated commitment to furthering an equitable and inclusive school community that supports a deep sense of belonging
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Growth-oriented professional who embraces a collaborative approach to innovation and creative problem solving
