Description
Shady Side Academy’s Senior School Visual Arts Department is seeking a full-time Chair/Art Teacher for the 2023-24 academic year.
Requirements:
Ideal candidates will have:
- Prior secondary school experience as an art teacher.
- Prior experience as Department Chair.
- A demonstrated commitment to a high level of artistic expression.
- Ability to work as a team with the Visual Arts faculty.
- An interest in Interdisciplinary work between departments.
- Interest in showcasing student work in school exhibitions and through art competitions, eg. Scholastics Art Awards.
- Experience working with local, regional, national and/or international art organizations.
- Ability to run a thoughtful and intentional advisory group.
- Openness to being an integral part of a caring community of learners.
In addition, the successful candidate would be able to foster the learners' maximum potential and creativity. They would develop engaging plans for art strategies and techniques, ensure the adequacy of art tools and materials for the learners' use, and maintain safety standards in the studios.
Responsibilities
Art Teacher: Teaching a variety of art classes; particularly 3D courses, including glass, metal, and ceramics. The ability to teach architecture would be a bonus.
Support for art related campus displays. Organize and conduct field trips and visiting artists.
VA Chair: Specific responsibilities include, but are not exclusive to, the academic direction and leadership of the department, working collaboratively with the Administration to advance the Strategic Vision and mission of the Academy, representing and appropriately advocating for the department, managing and mentoring teachers, collaborating with community arts organizations, museums and artists. Also, designing curriculum and establishing interdisciplinary opportunities.
General: There may be the possibility of residing in a dormitory or living on campus and serving as residential faculty in the boarding program. Other duties, such as but not limited to proctoring exams, chaperoning dances, or serving on committees, may be assigned as needed by the Academy. Also, all faculty are expected to coach two seasons or the equivalent and advise students.
Classification and Compensation
This is a full-time, year-round, exempt position. Salary is competitive with area independent schools and commensurate with experience. Excellent health and retirement benefits are part of the employment package. Lunch is included when school is in session. Funding exists to support continued advanced degree work, as well as participation in professional conferences, workshops, summer study, and travel.
