Position Description
Shady Side Academy’s Country Day School is seeking a full-time Music and Theater Arts teacher for the 2022-2023 school year. A successful Music and Theatre Arts teacher engages students in meaningful learning experiences that meet their students’ needs and gives them the confidence to take risks. Shady Side’s teachers cultivate academic skill development and support students’ social-emotional growth. This applicant will work collaboratively within a team of child-focused educators and has a deep commitment to this important time in a student’s educational journey.
Primary Responsibilities
- Keeps students at the center of their decision making and instructional practice.
- Collaborates with colleagues and supports endeavors that benefit the larger community.
- Cultivates positive partnerships with parents through consistent and transparent communication about their child’s progress.
- Utilizes the responsive classroom approach and desires to cultivate an emotionally safe educational environment for their students.
- Teaches General Music and Theatre Arts to students in grades Pre-K through 5
- Leads in the production of school wide and grade level theatrical performances that are developmentally appropriate for various grade levels
- Creates an educational environment that helps students to enjoy and appreciate music and have the courage to engage in theatrical experiences
- Experience in music and vocal pedagogy for children
- The ability to arrange and compose music, and can play an instrument(s) is preferred but not required
- Make connections with musicians and music organizations to provide unique and diverse music experiences for our students
- Will share music at assemblies, homecoming, and other school or academy wide events
- Integrates music and theater arts in new and creative ways to enhance the student learning experiences outside of the class and throughout the entire community.
- Utilizes instructional strategies that are engaging, research supported, and meet students’ individual needs
- Will collaborate and work closely with the arts colleagues at the Country Day School and the other Shady Side campuses to create collaborative arts experiences and to share ideas
- Will write report cards and meet with families as needed to provide insight into their child’s progress.
- Performs extra duties such as recess, lunch and arrival/dismissal duties, as needed.
- Attends all faculty meetings, in-service days, and teacher team meetings.
- Completing other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Head of Lower Schools and/or Assistant Head of the Country Day School.

Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in elementary music education is required and a master’s degree is strongly preferred. Ideal candidates have some experience working with elementary school students, a flexible and team-oriented approach, excellent written and oral communication skills, exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, superior interpersonal skills, a sense of humor, and a positive demeanor.
Compensation
Salary is competitive with area independent schools and commensurate with experience. Excellent health and retirement benefits are part of the employment package. Funding exists to support continuing education and professional development.
