The A&AR Associate Director executes the school’s annual fundraising campaign and is a key steward for FA’s alumni body, helping to cultivate this constituency for a lifetime of connection to the school and donor support.
This individual should possess very strong interpersonal and communication skills and is highly adept in the use of social media. S/he has an outgoing and friendly nature and an appreciative understanding of the history and diversity of Fryeburg Academy’s student body and alumni base. The Associate Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations is one member of a three-person advancement team and is charged with developing appropriate strategies and goals for annual fundraising and friend-raising. This position reports to the Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations.
Specific director duties fall among the following essential functions of the job:
- Plans and executes annual strategy for Academy Fund success
- Plans and implements annual calendar of alumni events, ensuring follow-up to build relationships, communicate, and create/prime donors
- Asks for gifts and prepares identified alums for the ask by others
- Does individual outreach to alumni in recognition of their life events
- Develops and runs FA Class Agent program
- Works with FA senior class to develop understanding and beginning practice of philanthropy; builds engagement of the school’s younger alumni
- Serves on editorial board for Scenes magazine
This position also involves participation in the following advancement team functions:
- Developing/maintaining knowledge of FA’s alumni base in all areas – names, locations, work and personal histories, affinity levels, ability to donate to FA or assist FA with services
- Communicating school news and alumni-interest items with alumni base in multiple venues: website, social media, shared photography, community events, information delivery, press releases, event coverage, Scenes magazine, e-newsletters
- Hosting a variety of public FA functions
- Updating records in Raiser’s Edge fundraising software
Qualifying Education and Experience:
- B.A. or B.S. required
- Experience in annual fundraising for non-profit organizations and/or familiarity with independent school alumni and development operations preferred
- FA alumni status a plus

- A strong belief in independent education, and particularly the mission of Fryeburg Academy
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to utilize technology to operation’s advantage, i.e., tailored use of database, spreadsheets, social media
- Goal-orientation; ability to analyze progress and outcomes via data, and to adjust accordingly
- Experience with event planning and management
- Affinity for occasional travel
- Sociable desire for regular and visible involvement in life of the school
