Position Overview:
'Iolani School seeks a Chaplain Curate to serve on the school’s chaplaincy team beginning in the 2023-2024 school year. The duration of the position is two years, with the possibility of an extension.
The position is designed to help the curate discern the vocational call to school chaplaincy and to meet the needs of the Chapel Team as the number of students at the school grows. Under the guidance of the Upper and Lower School Chaplains, the curate is expected to plan and oversee liturgical and worship services at the school, teach classes in the Religion Department, and be an integral part of the school community. The curate will have the opportunity for some pastoral counseling and also to work with the chaplains to plan wedding and funeral services for members of the community and alumni.
The curate is also expected to participate in the life of The Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i, which could include a tenure with a local congregation as a non-stipendiary Priest Associate.
Requirements:
'Iolani School seeks an individual with a Master in Divinity degree from an accredited seminary with excellent organizational and communication skills, who is on track to being ordained an Episcopal priest. Fully ordained priests considering or developing a ministry in schools are also welcome to apply. The ideal candidate will have a vocation (or be discerning a vocation) for work in schools and will combine a love of school life with a grounded spiritual practice and the commitment of a servant-leader. The ability to engage effectively with children, parents, and faculty with a firm faith commitment, and a respect for the identities and religious traditions beyond Christianity are necessary qualities for any candidate. Importantly, the candidate must possess a collaborative spirit and be able to work effectively with musicians, student leaders, and members of the religion department to plan chapel services.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Promoting the spiritual life of the school and serving as the custodian for our Episcopal School identity.
- Leading the liturgical life of the school, including organizing and leading worship services.
- Teaching academic courses in religion.
- Providing pastoral care and counseling to members of the school community.
- Supporting our office of Community and Civic Engagement as it provides for opportunities for students to serve in the community.
- Participating in the life of the diocese and of the wider church.
- Professional experience and/or a personal commitment to increase the school’s understanding of topics and initiatives related to diversity, access, equity, and belonging.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to grasp, handle and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out; and smell. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Travel:
Occasional overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required for special events.
