Abington Friends Upper School seeks a full time Upper School History teacher to join the Faculty.
For this position, the Upper School seeks a thoughtful, experienced, and collaborative educator with a demonstrated ability to teach United States and World History. Special interest is given to candidates able to teach regionally focused and/or ethnic studies electives in (i.e. Black Studies, Asian Studies, MENA, etc.)
Candidates should have experience teaching a wide range of courses and developing new curriculum that include project-based assessments. The ideal candidate is a teacher leader who has comfort building rapport with high school students at all grade levels (9-12); working individually with students and in classrooms of diverse learners.
The position will teach four sections of History, including 9th or 10th grade survey courses and electives for 11th and 12th grade. In addition, Upper School teachers serve as student advisors. Opportunities to coach and/or supervise other student life activities are available.
In addition, AFS seeks candidates with:
- Experience teaching in the high school setting
- A BA in History or a related field, Masters preferred
- A demonstrated interest in historical thinking skills and historical inquiry
- A broad range of experience with World and United States History survey courses
- A comfort teaching a regionally focused and/or ethnic studies course (i.e. Black Studies, Asian Studies, MENA, etc.)
- A familiarity with a Quaker education community
- An ability to work in a multi-genre reading and writing intensive program
- A willingness to work in a highly collaborative department
- Familiarity with teacher leadership and solution-seeking problem solving a plus
- A willingness to meet and collaborate with students outside of classroom hours
- A comfort working with and appreciation of adolescents as learners and individuals
- Extracurricular advising and athletic coaching experience a plus
