The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator to serve as a Middle School Mathematics Teacher and Advisor for the 2023-2024 school year.

Job Overview
The Middle School Mathematics Teacher reports to the Head of Middle School and will teach four sections of math and serve as an advisor in Middle School, grades 4-7.
Chapin’s Mathematics Program
Chapin’s Mathematics Department believes all Chapin students are mathematicians in the making. Our next Middle School Mathematics Teacher will design a classroom environment where students work collaboratively to discover the beauty, interdisciplinarity, and myriad applications of mathematics; construct their understanding of rich concepts and complex algorithms; explain their thinking through daily discourse and writing; engage in frequent, purposeful practice needed to achieve fluency; and cultivate the skills of critical thinking and problem solving as they embrace challenges relevant to the world around them.
Chapin’s mathematics professionals work as a team to develop and refine a multi-layered pedagogy with an appropriate balance of access and challenge; competition and collaboration; inquiry and instruction; skills and conceptual understanding. Together, we are propelled by a shared commitment to sending curious, dedicated, skilled, innovative, and courageous young mathematicians into a field that would benefit deeply from their contributions.
Compensation will be commensurate with experience: the range is $68,500–$120,000.
Chapin’s next Middle School Mathematics Teacher and Advisor will be:
A mathematician who demonstrates a commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary curriculum development who
- Believes in and has experience teaching an integrated, inquiry-based curriculum;
- Collaborates with colleagues within the department and across disciplines and divisions to develop practices and curricula that enrich the academic program;
- Embodies the joy of learning and exploration by sharing their passion and enthusiasm for mathematics with students.
A student-centered educator who values each student’s voice, experience, and history who
- Understands and appreciates the Middle School learner within the context of pre-adolescent development;
- Demonstrates effective pedagogy, particularly in response to the needs of students with a variety of backgrounds, learning needs, and interests;
- Has experience with Middle School Advisory programs.
An educator who actively cultivates a classroom and community of belonging by
- Engaging students in the process of creating an environment that fosters inquiry, diversity of thought, feedback, and collaboration;
- Developing, alongside students, a safe and productive learning environment, building trust with students through clear guidelines and expectations.
A partner to students, their parents, and colleagues in teaching and learning who
- Provides timely and specific feedback to students and parents;
- Demonstrates a passion for learning by sharing their love of learning with students and colleagues and engaging in ongoing professional development.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics
- At least 2-3 years experience teaching math in Middle School
- Experience teaching inquiry-based mathematics
Preferred
- Master’s degree in mathematics and/or education
- Experience with differentiated pedagogies and instruction
- Familiarity with a variety of curricular materials, including standards-based materials
- Experience as a Middle School Advisor
