Key Responsibilities
The part-time school nurse works in partnership with the full-time school nurse and the school to create a healthy environment and to respond to the individual needs of children.
Position Requirements
The part-time school nurse assists in the management of school health services, is responsible for the health needs of students ranging from three to eighteen years of age, and provides care and health advice for employees.
School Health Services
- Assists in providing individualized care for each student
- Ensures the continuity of care for students with health needs while they are away from school by instructing faculty on how and when to intervene, how to administer injectable medication, and when to summon emergency care.
- Protects confidential health information as it pertains to HIPAA and FERPA requirements while providing faculty and staff with the information they need to educate children with health issues.
- Plans, delivers, and documents the care given.
- Communicates with parents about any situation that may be serious or affect their child’s ability to learn.
- Dispenses prescription medication according to physicians’ orders. Dispenses over-the-counter medication according to standing orders with parent permission.
- Conducts age-appropriate, required health screenings and notifies parents when referral for further evaluation is necessary.
- Participates in the identification and follow-up of students at risk for physical and psychosocial problems.
- Institutes Ohio Department of Health guidelines for control of communicable diseases.
- Follows the guidelines for crisis/emergency care.
- Ensures compliance with regulations governing programs and facilities as related to health, wellness, and health services.
- Advocates for student health and wellbeing.
Health Education
- Assists in educating students, families, and employees about communicable diseases and ways to prevent their spread.
- Assists in educating parents about caring for sick children and when they need to stay home.
- Assists in classroom instruction on health-related topics.
- Utilizes the opportunity to provide health teaching during student visits to the health office.
- Serves as a resource to students, families, and employees regarding general health information.
School Environment
- Identifies safety hazards by utilizing student injury data and reports these to the facilities manager for corrective action.
- Monitors items or practices that may cause health hazards or nuisance health problems and recommends change.
- Participates in inspections of the school environment by regulating agencies.
- Advises on methods of communicable disease control when there is an environmental concern.
Other Duties
- Assumes responsibility for professional growth and continuing education activities.
- Maintains the highest standards of nursing practice and ethics.
- May be asked to attend large school events like, but not limited to, commencement.
Preferred Educational and Experiential Preparation
- Current RN License in the state of Ohio
- Experience with adolescent diabetic care
- At least 2 years of working experience as a registered nurse
