Newark Academy seeks a Director of Sustainability to initiate and coordinate efforts to carry out the school’s mission in a way that prioritizes environmental sustainability as an essential educational and institutional value. The Director should be an innovative but diplomatic changemaker, a systems-thinker, a knowledgeable and passionate advocate for sustainability, a lifelong learner, a self-starter and a program builder. Tasked with working with a range of constituencies — from 6th graders, seniors, faculty and staff to Trustees and alumni — the Director will serve as the institution’s champion for sustainability values and programs. This is a part-time, 10-month position that will represent 50 percent of a full-time employee’s responsibilities or approximately 20 hrs/week. This position’s work will be overseen by the Director of Studies in coordination with the Director of Operations and other members of the school leadership team.
Responsibilities:
- Chairs Newark Academy’s Sustainability Team, the group charged with developing and executing sustainability-related strategic goals and institutional priorities
- Collaborates with the Director of Studies, Principals, Dean of Faculty and other academic leaders to integrate sustainability into the school’s curriculum
- Partners with Directors of Community Service, DEI, Immersion, June Term and others to ensure sustainability efforts intersect and align meaningfully with other core elements of school program
- Coordinates with Food Services, Facilities, Athletics, Technology, Auxiliary Services, and other offices to identify, plan for and carry out improvements in campus operations
- Serves as a partner to various constituencies, such as the Parents Association, Admission, Advancement, and new faculty and student orientations to assure alignment and engagement with the school’s sustainability efforts
- Provides content for publications and social media to promote the efforts and accomplishments of sustainability at Newark Academy in partnership with the External Affairs team
- Facilitates ongoing professional development around sustainability for faculty/staff and other constituencies
- Advises and/or supports advisors to student environmental clubs and programs
- Stays up-to-date on best practices in local and national sustainability education to bring knowledge back to the NA community
- Meets monthly with the Head of School
Requisite Skills/Experience:
- Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to sustainability and sustainability education
- Ability to inspire, motivate and collaborate with a wide range of constituencies
- Capacity to balance multiple roles and responsibilities
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- 3+ years in classroom teaching and/or curriculum design/development
