DESCRIPTION:
CFS seeks a dynamic and collaborative music faculty member to serve as band director and music instructor to cover a maternity leave starting in March and going through June. There is the possibility of continued employment beyond the 2022-2023 school year. This individual will lead a well-established band and teach a music technology class. We are looking for someone who has conducting experience, demonstrated mastery of at least one wind instrument and possesses a Music or Music Education Degree; a master’s degree is preferred.
The ideal candidate will join a collaborative arts department; share the joy of teaching in an all-male culturally diverse, independent, boarding, college preparatory school; and will have an understanding and sensitivity to DEI issues.
This is a part-time position which will include teaching two classes which each meet three times each week, on a rotating schedule. Additional responsibilities will include attending regular school meetings and faculty meetings.
Responsibilities and Expectations:
- Teach and lead the band which regularly performs at CFS events such as pep rallies, basketball games, college draft day, revisit days, CFS fundraisers and more. In addition to performing for CFS events, the band also hosts an annual spring concert.
- Be able to use arranging software and make simple arrangements in order to meet the needs of the unique instrumentation of the ensemble.
- Select appropriate and varied repertoire to fit the needs, abilities and interests of our band participants.
- Keep supplies stocked such as reeds, guitar strings, valve oil, etc.
- Take care of basic instrument repairs as needed or coordinate with local music shop.
- Oversee, organize and maintain concert attire and equipment.
- Oversee, organize and maintain music scores in our Wenger library.
- Care for and maintain equipment and studio spaces.
- Co-host CFS’s Spring Music Concert with choir director (Sunday, May 14).
- Organize the Pep Band performance during “college draft day” (Wednesday, May 24).
- Teach one Music Technology Class which will require experience with DAW loop-based software (SoundTrap is our platform).
- Have experience with the topics covered in the course: songwriting/lyricism, chord writing, history; musical genres in the USA, the psychology of music and film and the Art of Foley.
- Run an experiential, hands-on classroom where all assessments are project/performance based.
- Must be comfortable with culturally relevant content.
- Be available for two 65 minute “conference time” periods per week to provide students with additional help – this is for both the Band and Music Tech classes.
- Compose formal report card comments for each student as directed by the Academic Office.
- Participate in department meetings, regular faculty/staff meetings, grade level and professional development opportunities.
