Renbrook School (West Hartford, CT), an independent day school for children age three to grade eight, seeks an experienced educator to teach middle school mathematics (pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Algebra II) and, if qualified, serve as Mathematics Department Chair. The most qualified candidate will have experience with elementary and middle school mathematics, and preferably have a background in the Singapore Mathematics curriculum. Candidates with experience at one level or the other and a willingness to learn will also be considered.
In its current layout, the Department Chair teaches a reduced load and oversees the Upper School (grades five-eight) math program. However, planning to incorporate the kindergarten through grade four program in its future formulation is underway. This position ultimately reports to the Head of School but will work closely with the Academic Team, comprised of the Division Heads and Head of School.
The Math Department Chair is responsible for providing instructional leadership and supervision to Renbrook’s math teachers, which include middle school math teachers and elementary school homeroom teachers. The Chair will work closely with teachers, staff, and administration to ensure that all students develop a strong math foundation and the skills, passion, and confidence to excel in future math courses.

Key Responsibilities of the Mathematics Department Chair:
- Provide instructional leadership and support to math teachers, including coaching, mentoring, and professional development.
- Collaborate with teachers to develop and implement effective math curriculum and instructional strategies.
- Assess student learning and progress and use data to drive instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
- Facilitate communication and collaboration within the math department and with other departments to advance interdisciplinary projects.
- Oversee the budget and resources for the math department, including the selection of instructional materials.
- Manage department scheduling, including course offerings, student placement, and teacher assignments.
- Promote a positive and inclusive school culture that values and supports math education.

The successful candidate will possess the following experience and qualifications:
- A Master's Degree (preferred) or Bachelor's Degree in mathematics or related field.
- Experience working with or teaching children, particularly in an independent, day, college preparatory, or like school setting.
- A love and enthusiasm for teaching elementary and/or middle school mathematics.
- A strong understanding of child development and the unique needs of lower and middle school students.
- Knowledge of 21st-century learning principles and techniques.
- A proven record of positive and constructive peer-to-peer collaboration as well as effective management experience.
- Skills, talents, and flexibility for contributing to an independent school community in additional capacities. ?For example: coaching sports, leading homeroom, advising extracurricular activities, etc.
- Proven history of building positive relationships with and among students, parents and faculty.
