Lawrence Academy has an opening for an experienced, innovative Mathematics Teacher starting in August 2023. Candidates must have a solid background in algebra I & II, geometry, and pre-calculus. Experience with computer science, and/or finite topics (probability & statistics, graph theory) and calculus is a plus. Candidates should be comfortable teaching in a non-traditional math environment and working collaboratively with colleagues to develop curriculum and resources. Candidates should also embrace developing learning strategies to help a range of students to achieve success.
Lawrence Academy’s mathematics department uses an integrated curriculum that, rather than teaching the usual sequence of algebra/geometry/algebra over the first three years of high school, combines algebra and geometry with a problem-solving approach to mathematics. Lower-level math classes are taught using a Mastery approach to learning. Math classes at LA focus on real-world math applications; classes are structured so that students are actively engaged in finding solutions to problems and mathematical simulations through discovery exercises and investigations. The math department uses Ti84 graphing calculators in the classroom as well as software applications such as Geogebra and Desmos. Candidates should be interested in developing their technological skills and applications for use in the classroom. Candidates should also embrace developing learning strategies to help a range of students to achieve success. Candidates must also be very comfortable working one-on-one with students and be open and accessible for extra-help; important components of being a math teacher at Lawrence Academy.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, faculty members are fully involved in the curricular, co-curricular (primarily athletics), and extracurricular programs at the school. Interested candidates should expect to live in a dormitory, but on-campus (non-dorm) or off-campus housing might be an available alternative. All members of the faculty are part of our residential program and have regular weeknight duty and some weekend duties.
