Job Description
An enthusiastic teacher of computer science and its applications, the Computer Science Teacher is responsible for teaching students in grades 6 - 12 skills including how computers work: the theory, design, development, and application of software; computational systems; and the art of programming. This skilled user and promoter of technology will foster positive relationships and dedicate themselves to our core principles of character, educational vigor, diversity, and community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and facilitate meaningful, rigorous, level-appropriate instruction to students
- Encourage students to discover computer science concepts and skills by creating personally relevant, tangible, and shareable projects
- Provide course/program management in the overall knowledge and application of software development
- Teach a variety of computer science courses at the Middle and High School levels, including Advanced Placement and courses such as artificial intelligence, web design, and data structures
- Expose students to the scope of computer science studies, from abstract ideas (determining what problems can be solved with computers and the complexity of the algorithms that solve them) to the tangible (designing applications that perform well on handheld devices, that are easy to use, and that uphold security measures)
- Serve as an advisor to a group of eight to ten students, supporting and encouraging their personal and academic growth
- Embrace the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and continually evaluate curriculum and pedagogy to reflect this commitment
- Demonstrate a desire for constant professional and personal growth by regularly participating in and seeking out professional learning opportunities
- Promote school life by sponsoring student clubs and activities and serving on academic committees
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree is required: Master’s degree is preferred
- Minimum of three years of teaching experience
- Strong background in computer science and knowledge in Computer Science education
- Robotics and Advanced Placement (AP) teaching experience preferred
- Preferred technical qualifications include: Java, Python, hardware and networking, mobile app development, cybersecurity and other relevant technologies
- Proven success working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, parents, and school leaders
- Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal skills
