The Dalton School, a K-12 independent, coeducational school located in Manhattan, is consistently recognized as one of the top independent day schools in the nation. It has a total enrollment of about 1,300 students and a faculty and staff of approximately 350.
The Dalton School Office of Equity & Belonging [“EB”] seeks a full time Associate Director of Equity & Belonging to support the School’s Equity & Belonging initiatives, trajectory, and momentum. The position will report to the Chief of Equity & Belonging to develop and implement Dalton’s expansive vision around the work. The role is expected to evolve as the school and the office continue to evolve.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Chief of Equity & Belonging to determine goals, refine Office vision and plans for existing and new EB initiatives.
- Assist and support the Chief of Equity & Belonging with the design and implementation of all EB initiatives, programming and special projects for students, parents, faculty/staff, and alumni. (New Employee Orientation, IDEA Labs, Parent Programming, Professional Development, etc.)
- Assess and oversee ongoing student-facing programming led by the Office of EB divisional coordinators and develop new programming as appropriate.
- Serve on a portion of Dalton committees/task forces as assigned by the Chief of Equity & Belonging (Admissions, Alumni DEI, Communications, etc.)
- Meet regularly with and implement leadership training for affinity group advisors and student leaders
- Along with the Chief of Equity & Belonging, act as a resource and support for teaching a culturally relevant and sustaining curriculum in the K-12 program.
- Be a presence in the school as a support and model for EB work in the community
- Represent the school in various internal and external capacities when needed, including conferences, hiring fairs, admissions events, and other independent school events.
- Possibly teach an elective or EB course, determined based on skills and background
- Perform other duties as necessary to support EB efforts in the school
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging focused; work with students in a K-12 educational setting is preferred
- Commitment to progressive education, anti-racist practices, and student-centered pedagogy
- Demonstrated ability to effectively engage across dynamics of difference, facilitate difficult conversations and address varying perspectives on a range of issues
- High degree of oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills in a variety of modes
- High-level collaboration skills with a wide range of constituencies, but can also work autonomously with minimal oversight
- Demonstrated experience with designing and facilitating learning opportunities for students and adults
- The ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with a high degree of discretion and sensitivity
- Able to manage multiple competing priorities while maintaining a strict delivery timetable
- Flexibility to work occasional nights and weekends for school events and conferences
