The Dalton School, a K-12 independent, coeducational school located in Manhattan, is consistently recognized as one of the top independent day schools in the nation. It has a total enrollment of about 1,300 students and a faculty and staff of approximately 350.
A thought leader with strong program implementation skills, the K-12 Director of Global and Community Engagement is an educator with proven curriculum development experience, who understands how to leverage institutional resources to successfully achieve mission-related goals with respect to global and community engagement. The Director is a dynamic presence and a strategic thinker who will manage, promote, and develop external programming to enhance students’ experiences at Dalton.
The purpose of this position is to direct and expand The Dalton School’s global and domestic partnerships across our service, internship, travel and online education programs in service to Dalton’s commitment to “encourage community responsibility, combat prejudice and engage students as participants in a democratic society and global community.”
This is a full time administrative position, including the instruction of one academic course and reports to the Assistant Head of School.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee and promote international programs and travel, partnerships with other schools and organizations locally and around the world, including Dalton Global Initiatives and Dalton Global Online Academy
- Work with Divisional administrative teams, Assistant Directors of Faculty and Curriculum, Grade Level Coordinators and Department Chairs to fulfill service related goals of the Dalton Strategic Plan, specifically the inclusion of community engagement within the curriculum at the First Program, Middle and High School levels
- Manage the coordinator of service learning, delegating appropriate responsibilities and fostering a collaborative expansive vision for Dalton’s service learning program
- Support students through integrating meaningful volunteer activities with challenging and relevant coursework, yielding self-discovery, the acquisition of skills, and the building of strong values and character
- Oversee and expand Dalton’s Internship program, connecting Dalton alums, community leaders and industry professionals with our students
- Collaborate with the Office of Equity and Belonging to promote equity and social justice within Dalton Global and Community initiatives
Additional responsibilities include…
- Assessing and establishing new/innovative programs that will promote student civic engagement and experiential learning opportunities
- Developing organizational systems and observation models to assess the efficiency of global and service learning programs
- Oversee contract negotiations, budget, and safety considerations (CPR Training, chaperone training, liability, etc) for all global and domestic DGl trips
- Supporting teachers to engage their students in purposeful action and reflection as part of academic classes
- Broadening the Dalton experience beyond the Dalton campus by partnering with local, national, and global organizations
- Supporting students as agents of change at the grassroots, activist, and/or policy-shaping levels
- Bringing awareness and empathy to service learning
- The potential to teach one academic course
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required, Masters or Doctoral Degree preferred
- Minimum of 5 years progressive teaching and/or administrative experience in secondary schools (independent school experience preferred)
- Direct experience managing study abroad, cultural exchange or other global programs
- Proven commitment to community engagement through service learning, volunteer work with local and/or national organizations and experience with service initiatives focused on student partnerships
