Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle, is currently recruiting for a School Nurse. The School Nurse reports to the Director of Student and Family Support during the school year, and the Director of Summer School Programs during summer school, and works closely with division directors, athletic trainers, and counselors, as well as students, families, faculty, and staff. In general, the School Nurse will be responsible for the following:
Responsibilities
Input on School Policies/Stay current on local and national public health
- Assist in developing school health and safety plans
- Stay current on, and implement, all legal requirements and risk-mitigation best practices that relate to the physical and mental health of students and employees of the school.
- Be the school’s liaison with public health agencies.
- Attend and participate in medical advisory board meetings
- Provide opinions and input on decisions related to campus-wide policies and procedures for emergent community health concerns.
- Help to ensure that the school is following up to date best practices identified by state and county health officials for the management of communicable diseases
- Develop and implement health and safety policies and procedures in support of the school’s mission and in compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines
- Collaborate with administrators on the updates and revisions of policy documents
- Assist with developing school policies regarding communicable diseases; oversee and guide implementation of those policies.
Medical Records, Responses, and Training
- Review, maintain, and distribute student medical records (e.g. emergency forms, immunization records).
- Conduct health assessments, to include: triage students for appropriate care, referral and follow up, treat and administer care for minor injuries and ailments.
- Manage the over the counter medications and/or prescription process.
- Coordinate with HR regarding emergency and first aid procedure training for employees (e.g. bloodborne pathogens, epi-pens, emergency plans)
- Order health supplies, materials, and equipment
- Facilitate the distribution and storage of menstrual supplies and prophylactics
- Management of on campus immunization clinics such as flu shots for employees and students.
Collaborate with colleagues (SST, athletic trainers, US/MS Admin, counselors)
- Be a collaborative member of the Middle School and Upper School Student Support Teams (SST), which include the school counselors, learning resources coordinators, family support liaison, an assistant director, and the director of student and family support.
- Work in partnership with the school’s athletics trainer and Student Support Teams regarding concussion protocols and return to play and return to learn decisions.
- Partner with counselors on student mental health management, including assessment of self-harm, suicidality and hospitalizations.
- Facilitate academic accommodations process and provide ongoing case management for students with documented qualifying medical conditions.
- Consult with the director of athletics and the director of experiential education to support health related aspects of co-curricular programs

- Other duties may be assigned by the Director of Student and Family Support.
Experience and Professional Competencies
- A bachelor’s degree in nursing (required)
- Advanced nursing degree (preferred)
- A valid Washington State Registered Nurse License (required)
- Be certified in Adult and Children First Aid, CPR and AED
- Nursing experience working with middle or high schools-age students (preferred)
- Be proficient in the use of technology and health related databases (e.g. Google Suite, Outlook, Magnus Health)
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive health information gathered in the course of the duties
- Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
- Candidates must satisfactorily complete three criminal background checks.
- Candidates must provide proof of vaccination and booster to human resources. Candidates requesting a medical and/or religious exemption should reach out to Human Resources.
Salary and Benefits
Salary Range: $70,000 - $90,000
Classification: Exempt Staff
Schedule: 1.0 FTE - Extended School Year Appointment
Work schedule includes all school days, including summer school. Time off includes all school breaks and most of August. Schedule may on occasion include some weekend work, with compensating time off during the week.
