SUMMARY
The Middle School Learning Specialist supports the School’s mission and its long-standing commitment to a diverse community of learners. Working alongside the other Learning Specialist in the Middle School, the Learning Specialist collaborates and consults with faculty, students, and families in supporting students with diagnosed learning differences.
This is a full-time, 12-month exempt position, including occasional weekends.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with the other Middle School Learning Specialist to document student needs and progress
- Provide academic and study skill support in a projected new learning center in Middle School, ensuring a welcoming and dynamic place for learning
- Guide students in discussing, developing, and implementing strategies to facilitate their learning
- Facilitate communication between students, families, teachers, and outside professionals
- Assemble materials from the School’s Learning Management System and other sources to assist students in organizational planning
- Provide study skills resources to students and teaching resources to faculty about on-going best practices for students with learning difficulties
- Facilitate teaching team meetings to discuss students
- Assist in coordination and administration of Middle School standardized testing
- Interpret outside educational evaluations and communicate the content of those evaluations to students, parents, and teachers
- Craft individual learning plans that reflect student diagnosis and accommodations that fit within school parameters
- Partner with student support team members (counselors, nurses, advisors, and team leaders) in meeting student needs
- Partner with Learning Specialists in other divisions as needed to support the school’s commitment to prek-12 education
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- BA or BS in Education or in Special Education; advanced degree preferred
- Previous school?teaching employment?experience;?independent school experience is a plus

- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Interpersonal skills needed to create a welcoming and inclusive environment while working cooperatively with a cross-section of community members (students, faculty, administration, parents, staff, and outside professionals);
- Ability to make difficult decisions and communicate reasoning and basis to others;
- Familiarity with handling confidential records;
- Experience with standardized testing;
- Proficiency with various uses of technology.
