Summary:
The Alexander Dawson School at Rainbow Mountain, a co-educational independent school, with approximately 577 students in grades preschool through eight, is seeking a full-time art teacher. The art teacher is responsible for implementing an innovative, choice-based curriculum in accordance with the Teaching for Artistic Behavior (T.A.B.) approach. The Dawson art program provides exposure to great works of visual expression from many cultures and enables students to experience how artists work through authentic learning opportunities. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the art teacher needs to demonstrate a strong commitment to the School’s Vision of teaching graduates to achieve their individual potential, savor life, and meet the challenges of the world.
Essential Functions:
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Contribute to the ongoing development of a comprehensive and innovative art program.
- Develop student interest and appreciation for creative expression through visual arts.
- Discover and develop individual talents of students in the field of art.
- Prepare and execute thoughtful, relevant units of study designed to convey enduring understandings and address different learning styles.
- Use a continuum to help assess student progress and inform lesson planning.
- Implement a studio-based art program that allows for student choice, autonomy, and agency.
- Model and foster the 8 Studio Habits of Mind.
- Maintain a safe and engaging learning environment.
- Consistently and clearly communicate with colleagues, administrators, and parents regarding student work, classroom projects, and/or behavior concerns.
- Collaborate with colleagues on cross-curricular projects, units of study, and exhibitions of learning.
- Promote problem-solving, cooperative learning, and conflict-resolution strategies.
- Structure lessons that encourage risk-taking in learning and model lifelong learning.
- Develop and maintain long-range and daily instructional plans.
- Maintain records for progress reports and behavior documentation.

- Knowledge of technology as an effective instructional tool
- Compacity in the area of technical theater
- Understanding of the design thinking process
- Knowledge and experience with the T.A.B. approach to teaching art a plus
- Experience designing and using rubrics for assessment
Qualifications:
- Four-year degree and three years of experience teaching art (Independent school experience preferred)
