Student Support: The ideal candidate possesses an understanding of the neuropsychological evaluation process, both private and through the Department of Education, and is familiar with neurodiverse students.
Classroom teaching: The ideal candidate possesses an understanding of the cognitive, social, and emotional development of preschool and elementary-aged children. They must be versed or have interest in educational approaches, including Montessori, that position the student as the driver of their own learning and curricula based on student inquiry.
Professional growth: The ideal candidate is also a perpetual learner. They should be excited to try new approaches to curriculum, pedagogy, and strategies for meeting student needs; take a receptive stance to feedback from colleagues; engage in thoughtful risk-taking in their teaching; and actively dig into workshops and discussions at faculty meetings and professional development events. They habitually reflect on the learning and needs of each child, as well as their own teaching.
Community: The ideal candidate brings a keen enthusiasm for the work; participates wholeheartedly in the life of the faculty; and conducts themselves professionally and warmly. They communicate often and clearly with colleagues about curriculum and student progress; freely share resources and teaching strategies; and infuse planning sessions with fresh, innovative ideas. They practice strong perspective-taking skills whenever they collaborate with colleagues and families.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in discussions, based on a strong knowledge base in the area of learning differences, including Dyslexia, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and ADHD
- Familiarity with evidence-based interventions in Reading, Writing, and Math, to participate in discussions and support student success
- Collaborate with the admissions team, when needed
- Help families navigate the process of obtaining Early Intervention and NYC DOE (CPSE and CSE) services
- Search for and interview DOE related service providers who align with the Caedmon School’s teaching philosophy
- Help teachers, parents, and providers to prepare for annual IEP/IESP meetings and attend these meetings
- Work closely with teachers and families to integrate individualized services (EI, DOE, private) into the classroom
- Will team-coordinate the ERB/CTP5 standardized testing for Third and Fourth grade each Spring and will be familiar with testing accommodations for students in Third - Fifth grade.
- Keep student data up-to-date on team documents
- Observe students in classroom environment
- Develop and help to facilitate faculty professional development workshops on supporting students with learning differences in the classroom
- Work closely with the School Psychologist to read, interpret, and summarize DOE/neuropsychological evaluations, in order to create and implement school learning and accommodation plans
- Plan and work collegially with the student success team, classroom teachers, and specialist teachers
- collaborate with members of student success team through weekly meetings
- Attend all faculty meetings
- Review weekly grade-level guidance meetings documents and follow-up when necessary
Qualifications/skills:
- A distinct fondness for young children
- Familiarity with the NYC Department of Education is preferred
- Demonstrate flexibility, innovation, and thoughtfulness in relating to students and families, as well as in working with colleagues.
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Master's degree highly preferred
- 3-5 years experience preferred
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Sense of humor
