LEARNING SPECIALIST ____________________________________________________
The Learning Specialist works with students in grades 6-12 , both directly and indirectly, who have academic and social-emotional learning differences. This individual must possess extensive knowledge of varying exceptionalities, intervention and success strategies for those who learn uniquely. Additionally, the Learning Specialist must be experienced in working with a talented and gifted population. Responsibilities include case management of identified students and direct service, including teaching and learning strategies, developing learning plans, managing students individually and in small groups. The Learning Specialist works collaboratively with counselors, faculty, admissions and administration.
RESPONSIBILITIES _________________________________________________________
Full-time employment for the Learning Specialist will commence in August 2023. Responsibilities will include:
- Assess students’ strengths and challenges within the classroom
- Assess executive functioning skills in students and create individualized plans for improvement
- Provide feedback to teachers on what strategies may best help their students and assistance in differentiating materials
- Develop, implement, and monitor accommodation plans for students based on assessment, observation, and external professional testing
- Implement specialized learning plans and track student progress, making adjustments as needed
- Meet with families, teachers, counselors and administration to effectively communicate student needs and plans
- Work in conjunction with the registrar to facilitate MAP standardized testing and use the data for individual and group curriculum improvements
- Teach and mentor students in small groups, and one-on-one
- Serve as a faculty advisor to a group of students
- Collaborate with and provide professional development and assistance to faculty to embed and incorporate differentiated learning best practices into all aspects of the curriculum
QUALIFICATIONS _________________________________________________________
Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in a middle/high school setting as a learning specialist, and a master’s degree in counseling, special education, or other related field. Experience working with gifted and talented students is preferred.
In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate:
- The ability to connect with and inspire students.
- The ability and desire to work collaboratively on a high functioning team.
- Excellent people skills.
- Mastery of Google Workspace for Education and an overall comfort with technology.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- The desire to be a part of a learning community.
- Experience with differentiated instruction, assessment and development of accommodation plans, and standardized testing facilitation and interpretation
- Ability to interpret, summarize, discuss and apply psychoeducational testing
