Job Overview
The Lower School Learning Specialist (Grades K–3) works as part of the School’s K–12 Learning Support Team and acts as an advocate for students requiring learning support. Chapin’s learning specialists are responsible for supporting our students by assessing students and collaborating with teachers by providing resources, instructional strategies, and guidance as they work to serve the needs of all students. The learning specialist provides academic support to students individually and in small groups and communicates regularly with parents and outside professionals. This individual reports jointly to the Head of Lower School and Director of Student Learning Support.

- Embraces data-informed teaching by developing screening protocols to evaluate and assess student growth
- Effectively shares strategies for student growth with colleagues in order to facilitate student learning and growth
- Engages in ongoing professional development with the goal of sharing it with the teaching community
- Stays abreast of current educational theory
A student-centered educator who values each student’s voice, experience, and history who
- Understands and appreciates the Lower School learner
- Demonstrates effective pedagogy, particularly in response to the needs of students with a variety of backgrounds, learning needs, and interests
An educator who actively cultivates a classroom and community of belonging by
- Developing, alongside students, a safe and productive learning environment, building trust with students through clear guidelines and expectations
- Cultivating an inclusive classroom that promotes diverse points of view and constructive dialogue
A partner to students, their parents, and colleagues in teaching and learning who
- Documents student progress in order to identify students’ strengths and needs and prepares and implements goals for intervention
- Employs research-based strategies to reach all students through differentiated approaches, mindful of students’ receptive and expressive learning preferences
- Collaborates with faculty as they develop strategies and supports that guide all students to access curriculum
- Cultivates respectful, supportive relationships with students’ families, rooted in a belief that a healthy partnership between school and home is vital to student success
Qualifications
Required
- Master’s Degree in Special Education or related field
- At least 5 years experience as a learning specialist or in a related field
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing
Preferred
- Experience working with children aged 5–9
- Possess a strong knowledge base of neurodiverse learners, especially dyslexia, speech and language challenges, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia
- General knowledge of neurodiverse learning styles and experience using learning profiles and educational diagnoses to guide instructional support
- Experience with Orton Gillingham based programs (Wilson Reading, Preventing Academic Failure, Alta, etc.) and literacy curriculum (Heggerty, Teacher’s College, Learning Without Tears, Writing Revolution).
Compensation
Salary will be commensurate with experience; the range for this position is $75,000-$120,000.
