Penn Charter seeks a full-time Director of Teaching and Learning for the 2023-24 school year. Reporting to the Assistant Head of School and collaborating closely with divisional leadership, the human resources department and department chairs, the Director of Teaching and Learning provides academic and instructional leadership and creates opportunities for accessible and meaningful professional development for the PK-12 faculty and staff. The Director of Teaching and Learning leads all aspects of the Teaching and Learning Center, including the selection and scheduling of daily sessions, publicizing sessions throughout the community, and maintaining attendance records and the TLC website. The Director of Teaching and Learning is also a co-clerk for the Committee on Teaching and Learning, a key driver of faculty professional growth at Penn Charter. The high standard of programmatic excellence we aim to achieve is directly related to the strength and continued growth of our faculty and staff, and the Director of Teaching and Learning is a key leader in these efforts. The Director will embody the School's mission and Quaker values, in particular the belief in continuous revelation, to ensure the continued growth of Penn Charter's faculty and students as well as Penn Charter's local, regional, and national reputation as a leader in independent schools.
Essential Functions
Professional Development
- Direct all aspects of Penn Charter’s Teaching and Learning Center to provide accessible and meaningful professional development opportunities at Penn Charter and beyond to help realize goals of the Strategic Vision. Some previous and current opportunities include: daily Teaching & Learning Center sessions throughout the day, before school, during lunch, and after school workshops; one-on-one sessions; Critical Friends Groups; Listening Circles; Empathy Interviews; classroom visits; school visits; online webinars
- Assist with the planning of professional development for Inservice Days
- Research and share trends and best practices in teaching, learning, and other issues related to the field of education
- Generate a yearly report with data regarding attendance at TLC sessions and PLCs as well as a list of the TLCs offered
- Promote non-Penn Charter professional development opportunities and both present and support others in the development of proposals to share their work at local, regional, and national conferences and workshops
- Supervise and support instructional coaching efforts
- Supervise the production and publication of PCPD
- Co-clerk the Committee on Teaching and Learning
- Co-clerk the VITAL Selection Selection Committee
Support of New Colleagues
- Welcome new employees and and support them throughout their transition to Penn Charter through timely and meaningful PD opportunities and community building events, including but not limited to: onboarding meetings in late spring and early summer, orientation in late August, monthly TLCs geared toward new employees and regular new employee and mentor events
- Oversee mentoring program in collaboration with the HR department
Additional Functions
- Manage the school-wide speaker series in partnership with school administration, division directors, the Center for Public Purpose, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office and others. This includes partnering with the communications team to publicize events, reviewing and signing contracts, and processing payment.
- Work closely with the Student Learning Center and Parent to Parent group
- Maintain a working relationship with Jefferson University’s Center for Teaching and Innovation and Nexus Learning to share professional development opportunities between our schools.
- Teach one class or lead a co-curricular activity
- Partner with school leadership to advance institutional initiatives as needed
- Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Head of School or their designee

Physical Demands
- Ability to walk, sit, or stand for extended periods of time
- Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at a time
- Ability and willingness to work in unpredictable weather conditions
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Minimum of 10 years experience in education
Preferred Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in Education or a related field
- Familiarity with the principles and practices of Quakerism and Quaker education
