The goal of all English Teachers at Holy Child is to lend their students an ever-growing facility with reading, writing, and thinking that leads to critical insight, self-awareness, and a connection with the world. Connelly School of the Holy Child is a Catholic, college preparatory school, committed to the intellectual, spiritual, artistic, physical, and social development of young women in grades 6 through 12. The school emphasizes academic challenge, joy of learning, and education of well-rounded women of faith and action. Primary Responsibilities:

· Provide a unique educational experience designed to prepare students for post-secondary education.

· Create lessons that offer a differentiated approach for the sake of student learning.

· Establish a classroom where all students feel safe and comfortable expressing their ideas or seeking help from their peers or the teacher.

· Integrate the use of technology and instruct students in a way that prepares them for college and careers in the 21st century.

· Use updated pedagogical practices like Project-Based Learning, Inquiry-Based Learning, Harkness Discussion, and other student-centered methods to authentically engage students.

· Make oneself available during free/planning periods to supplement instruction for individual student needs.

· Evaluate student performance continuously and provide timely and effective feedback to students based on their performance.

· Keep accurate and updated records of student performance on all assessments and assignments on the school’s online student management system.

· Give attention to and upkeep the décor of the physical space of the classroom and surrounding areas to stimulate student learning.

· Coordinate with other teachers to develop interdisciplinary lessons and assessments across the curriculum.

· Implement accommodations recommended by educational testing.

· Stay current on the latest developments in education and take advantage of professional development opportunities offered at the school and in the community. Faculty are required to attend at least one professional conference or workshop per year.

Communication Responsibilities

· Write progress reports at the midpoint of each grading period and report cards at the end of each grading period. Substantive comments about student strengths and areas of improvement should be included.

· Make phone calls or send emails to parents as needed for commendations on student work and specific concerns.

· Conduct parent/teacher conferences during the first semester and student-led conferences during the second semester.

· Provide responses to parent concerns or inquiries within 24 hours of receipt.

· Notify the Department Chair, Academic Dean, Dean of Students, or the Division Head with specific concerns regarding students’ academic, emotional, or moral development, information shared by parents which will impact student progress, or personal concerns which may impact the teacher’s ability to successfully function in the classroom.

Procedural Responsibilities

· Keep daily attendance records through the teacher portal.

· Uphold and enforce all school policies as outlined in the student/parent handbook.

· Attend scheduled faculty meetings on Thursdays after school.

· Attend and contribute to the exchange of ideas during monthly department meetings.

Other Duties

· Serve as a homeroom and/or club advisor and faculty mentor to students.

· Display exemplary attendance and be a positive team player.

· Attend school functions, including, but not limited to: Community Time, Chapel Time, Open House, and Back to School Night.

· To perform other duties as assigned by the Division Head.

· Previous experience as an English teacher

· Knowledge of teaching methods promoted by schools of excellence and English professional organizations.

· Deep understanding of the national curriculum and English language requirements

· Exceptional organizational and communication skills

· A patient and resilient personality

· Dedication to students and education

· BSc/BA in English Language or English Literature; MSc is a plus

· Ability to collaborate well with a diverse team

About Connelly School for the Holy Child

Connelly School of the Holy Child Founded in 1961 by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus as a college preparatory school for girls grade 6-12. The school is part of a network of 33 Holy Child schools in the United States, Europe and Africa, which is guided by the educational philosophy of Cornelia Connelly. Holy Child enrolls approximately 300 students every year from the Washington, DC metropolitan area as well as across the globe. Holy Child creates a personal learning experience with an 8 to 1 student to faculty ratio and offers fine arts programs as well as competitive sports teams in soccer, field hockey, volleyball, basketball, cross country lacrosse and more. Service is part of the Holy Child curriculum and students last year completed 5,000 hours of community service.
