Upper School Mandarin Teacher – Part Time
St. Andrew’s Episcopal School seeks to hire an engaging and knowledgeable part-time Upper School Mandarin Teacher (grades 9-12) with responsibilities to begin in August 2023 at St. Andrew’s Southwest Parkway campus. Beyond relevant credentials and experience, candidates should love working with high school-age students, demonstrate an intentional and relational instructional style, and value the whole student's development. All teachers at St. Andrew’s are responsible for advancing the School’s mission, upholding its Episcopal identity, and its commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment.
The position will be built around the experience and capabilities of the teacher. It will likely require teaching one to three Mandarin classes and/ or team teaching or assisting the full-time teacher. With some flexibility, we are willing to work with candidates to fit their schedule. Candidates who are capable of and interested in teaching other languages or core academic subjects (math, science, history, English, economics, computer science, etc.) should express so in their cover letter. The ability to teach a subject other than Mandarin is not a requirement.
Preferred candidates will be enthusiastic and passionate about teaching ninth through twelfth graders in a relational learning environment and student-centered classroom. Our instructional model emphasizes oral communication and is part of a well-articulated Mandarin sequence from 6th to 12th grade. We seek a colleague capable of extending that curriculum in ways that engage students in relevant, age-appropriate communicative tasks and that advance learners to the highest possible levels of Mandarin proficiency. Candidates are expected to have favorable attitudes or prior knowledge of project-based instruction, social-emotional learning, technology integration, curriculum development, differentiation, effective parent communication, and reflective practice. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills are also essential. Salary will be based on experience and qualifications. Candidates who contribute to the cultural and ethnic diversity of the community are encouraged to apply.
Compelling candidates will be able to demonstrate:
- Native-like fluency, perfect tone control, and mastery of traditional and simplified characters.
- Knowledge of Chinese culture and history, preferably from experience living in either China or Taiwan.
- Teaching experience in the United States.
- A working or developing knowledge of Mandarin I through Mandarin V-AP.
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field.
- Orientation to an oral proficiency approach.
- Collaborative mindset and team-oriented approach to curriculum design.
- Training and experience at the Upper School level.
- Exceptional writing skills in both languages.
- Involvement in ongoing professional development for teaching.
- Interest in contributing to the life of the school and the student experience.
- Support for the School’s Episcopal Identity.
- The ability to teach another language or core academic subject.
