Summary of the Position
MCS is hiring an Assistant Cook to join our dynamic team. The Food program is an essential part of the School and the Kitchen staff must reflect the program’s mission and values. We serve lunch to 350 students and staff Monday through Thursday, we provide snacks to 300 students Monday through Friday, and we cater nearly all in-house events including breakfast meetings, evening parent events, and larger fundraising events. We also support teachers in integrating food and cooking into their classroom curriculum.
Responsibilities:
- Set-up, prepare and deliver daily snacks, including 7th/8th grade breakfast.
- Assist in daily food preparation for lunch and events ; set up daily lunch for staff.
- Basic food prep including washing produce, cutting vegetables, and preparing simple baked goods under the guidance of the Head Chef.
- Set-up and deliver daily lunch carts to classrooms; retrieve empty carts, breakdown and store leftovers.
- Check, clean and restore alternative food boxes; restock silverware boxes.
- Set up lunch plates; ensure they are properly cleaned,sterilized, and stocked for the next school day.
- Remove trash, recycle and compost from Kitchen; vacuum & mop floors daily.
- Ensuring kitchen and staff areas are properly stocked (i.e., refilling paper towels, restocking coffee and tea, etc.)
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Requirements:
- NYC DOHMH Food Handlers Certification or in progress.
- At least three (3) years experience working in a school with a similar food program.
- Strong knife skills; basic knife skills and basic understanding of common kitchen equipment and food safety.
This position is covered under the LOC2110 collective bargaining agreement.
