SUMMARY:
The Upper School History and Religion Department is seeking a teacher who is passionate about the study of history and religion, enthusiastic about working with high school students and committed to developing their craft as a teacher. Cognizant of our increasingly connected world, the department has developed a set of curricular offerings that build from a two-year World History foundation, include various approaches to the teaching of American History and allow students to choose from a range of exciting senior level seminars. All tenth graders take a course in world religions, either the Eastern or Western tradition. The Upper School History and Religion Department is seeking a collaborative and multi-faceted colleague to join the team.
Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated ability to foster students’ critical thinking, writing and analytic skills and experience teaching in student-centered environments. We are looking for candidates who have also demonstrated a commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion, within and outside the classroom. We are most interested in versatile candidates with the ability to teach either of our World History courses, as well as American History, as well as additional history courses as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Course load will include sections of American History and either ancient or modern World History. Full-time teachers teach four sections in total.
- Successfully engage and develop student’s interest and enthusiasm for the subject matter.
- Attend departmental and divisional meetings, as well as all school professional development events. We offer a year-long program of activities for teachers new to the Masters School.
- Participate in the life of the Upper School by attending full group activities (morning meeting, student presentations and performances and culminating events) and by participating in non-teaching responsibilities, such as study hall, advising a club or coaching.
- Act as an advisor to a group of students after the first year of teaching.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Understanding of and desire to work with high school students
- Familiar with and willing to explore student-centered pedagogical approaches
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competency
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Energy, enthusiasm and curiosity – willingness to be a fellow learner with students
- Proficient in the use of technology
- Bachelor’s degree in History, Religion, Social Sciences and/or History education required, Masters preferred
- Interest in being an active member of The Masters School community, such as advising, student life, leading a student club, or coach of a team
