Principia is growing! We are seeking a teacher of Language Arts for sixth, seventh and eighth graders who uses a variety of teaching methods to meet students’ needs and mentors students as their teacher and character educator.

Work Performed: Essential Duties*
- Teach content and skills in English language, literature, composition, reading, journalism to middle school students, utilizing curriculum designated by Principia MS Language Arts department.
- Teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes, including daily lesson planning, regular pretesting, and backwards design of units (utilizes the Understanding by Design curriculum framework).
- Differentiate for multiple levels within each class (mixed-ability classrooms).
- Plan effective lessons that invoke student interest and ownership.
- Create a classroom environment that develops in each student skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to effective communication and literate citizenship.
- Develop appreciation of good literature of all types.
- Motivate students to read widely for information and recreation.
- Develop standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media.
- Share and build a love for language arts and other subjects.
- Monitor and support student progress by using different forms of assessment i.e. rubrics and a proficiency scale.
- Develop experiential opportunities to deepen understanding.
- Integrate technology where appropriate.
- Meet and communicate with students and parents regarding student growth in language arts skills.
- Participate in weekly faculty meetings about student growth in academics and character.
- Assess students in their approaches to learning.
- Help organize the administration of standardized testing and analyze the data for trends. Make decisions about instruction and specific student intervention in response to the data.
- Communicate with the Learning Engagement Center about students and push-in and pull-out services.
- Actively collaborate with colleagues across levels and departments to support the implementation of Integrated Studies and other school-wide initiatives.
- Actively participate in various committee meetings, faculty and parent meetings, and professional development
- Support Middle School activities by chaperoning social events and trips
- Display a love for working with middle school students; understands how to establish and maintain student respect and rapport.
- Participate in yearly goal-setting and frequent one-on-one meetings with supervisor.
- Reflect on teaching and learning regularly and improve practice.
- Complete the required portfolio, including walkthroughs, school visits, reflections, and goal-setting.
- Attend conferences with the intention of improving own practice, as well as initiatives for the MS.
- Participate in and contribute to weekly and yearly professional development sessions.
- Engage in professional learning experiences that support school initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English/Literature, Education or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Teaching certification preferred (required within two years of hire date).
- Relevant teaching experience with middle school students.
