Rye Country Day School is seeking a Middle School Art Teacher beginning August, 2023. Rye Country Day School is a coeducational, Prek-12, college preparatory school located in Westchester County, New York dedicated to providing students with an excellent education using both traditional and innovative approaches. Specific responsibilities of the position include:
- Knowledge including but not limited to: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, paper mache, digital art, contemporary and diverse artists and periods of Art History
- Fostering a climate of respect for each child as an individual, including all learning styles
- Allowing students to explore their creative visions
- Creating and maintaining a studio space that is safe, organized, positive, and supports student-centered learning
- Writing narrative comments assessing student growth
- Identifying and pursuing professional opportunities to enhance and extend pedagogy
- Collaborating with Lower and Upper School Art teachers and communicating with other members of the community as needed
- Curating and mounting student art shows and interactive community events
- Maintaining art exhibits in the hallways and in sculpture cabinets
- Running a thoughtful and intentional advisory group and communicating effectively with a diverse student body from varying backgrounds
- Taking part in planning and participating in grade level and Art field trips
- Participating in community events on a few weekends such as Arts Fest and the Block Party
- Familiarity with Choice Based/ TAB Art and the eight studio habits of mind a plus
Desired qualifications:
- Masters in Art Education or Art with a background in education
- 3-5 years of experience teaching Art at the Middle School level
- Excellent oral, written, and organizational skills
- Knowledge of Artsonia desired but not required
- Comfort with technology, including a 1:1 laptop program and online course management system; familiarity with Zoom and hybrid/online teaching
- A well-developed sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- An ability and willingness to support the extracurricular life of the school
- Genuine excitement for and ability to work with Middle School students, faculty, staff, and parents
