We are seeking a First Program Psychologist/Licensed Mental Health Counselor (Grades K-3). The primary responsibility of the psychologist/counselor is the management of the mental health and well-being of each child through partnering with teachers, administrators, parents, and outside professionals. The psychologist/counselor will provide strategies of prevention, intervention, and remediation to assist students and other members of the Dalton community in developing effective coping skills and responses to their environments. This is a full-time, 12-month position.
Through work with the following groups, the responsibilities of the First Program Psychologist/Counselor are to:
Students
- Provide short term and individual counseling for children struggling with social, emotional, and behavioral problems
- Facilitate groups for a variety of topics including social skills, divorce, impulse control, anger management, bereavement/grief, social aggression, and adoption
- Collaborate as a team to assess barriers to learning and determine the best instructional strategies to improve learning
- Support student understanding of identity as individuals and as part of a diverse community
Parents
- Work with parents on parenting issues including discipline, self-regulation, sibling rivalry, sleep, behavior management
- Provide support and outside referrals for parents on family issues such as divorce, illness, substance abuse, financial/job concerns, reproductive issues, personal struggles
- Help parents understand their child’s cognitive profile and develop the best educational plan for their child
- Interpret neuropsychological evaluations
- Host coffees and meetings on a variety of topics such as developmental norms, limit setting, teasing and bullying, anxiety
- Provide referrals for outside services for their child, including tutoring, therapy, neuropsychological evaluations, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, behavioral treatment
Faculty
- Observe children in class to evaluate behavioral or learning problems
- Assist with behavioral issues in the classroom and provide resources for specific problems
- Provide help with parent interactions
- Interpret neuropsychological evaluations
- Assess need for referral to Guidance team or outside specialists
- Design and implement academic and behavioral interventions
- Foster positive classroom environments through social-emotional work in the classroom by providing units on specific areas such as building friendships, tattling vs. teasing, bullying
Administrative and school-wide duties include:
- Facilitating Guidance and learning support meetings
- Maintaining and managing relationships with outside providers
- Administering standardized tests, interpreting and disseminating data to teachers, administration, and parents.
- Supervising and managing screenings for speech and language and occupational therapy
- Collaborating with the school Nurse and reporting to the Director of Health and Wellness and Division Director
- Liaising with the Middle School Psychologist/Counselor and managing the transition to Middle School for at-risk children and families
- Providing direct services and referrals to teachers and school personnel around personal/school issues
- Working with the crisis team to provide leadership, resources, direct services, and coordination with needed community services
- Participating in school-wide prevention programs and initiatives that help maintain a positive school climate including DEI work and mental health initiatives
- Consulting with Admissions staff, as necessary
Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in clinical, counseling, or school psychology and appropriate New York State licenses and/or certifications preferred, Master’s level considered
- Previous counseling experience in an elementary school preferred
- A well-developed sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members allowing for the ability to connect with the many constituencies; demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational, coordination, evaluation, and assessment skills
- Understanding of the social and emotional development of children and SEL curriculum
- Familiarity with progressive lower school curriculum and instruction
- Belief in lifelong learning and scholarly inquiry
- Proven ability to connect joyfully with students and faculty
