The Theater and Musicals Teacher is a position shared equally both by McCallie and Girls Preparatory School.

The teacher will direct and produce mission and developmentally appropriate Middle and Upper School plays and musicals involving students at both schools. The teacher should create an enthusiasm for plays and musicals that attract a wide range and growing number of students to participate. Such plays and musicals will regularly and generally be practiced in the context of an after-school extracurricular activity when academic classes have concluded. During the academic school day, the teacher will split his/her time between the two schools undertaking teaching and/or other responsibilities assigned by each school. The teacher communicates thoroughly with both schools and promotes close coordination between the schools. The position is considered full-time, salaried, exempt, and is eligible for full benefits.
Specific Responsibilities
- Recommend to the administrations of both schools an annual series of plays and musicals that will attract many students from a variety of backgrounds from both schools and that are mission and developmentally appropriate.
- Develop a growing number of students who are interested in and participate in plays and musicals, including meeting participation goals set by the two schools.
- Direct and produce each school year, at a minimum, three high-quality performances, some of which are plays and some of which are musicals. There should be at least one performance each season of the school year. Some performances will be held at GPS, and others at McCallie.
- Promote the plays and musicals to the students and school communities to generate enthusiasm for the program and good attendance at the performances.
- Execute all details and logistics of the plays and musicals, including the practices.
- During the academic class part of the school day (approximately 8:30 am - 3:30 pm), perform duties, which may include teaching classes, as may be assigned by each school, help with chapel or assemblies at either school etc. The time devoted to these duties will be split equally between the two schools.
- Participate in meetings and activities at each school as is customary for a full-time faculty member.
- Embody and promote the mission and ideals of each school, including developing positive and healthy mentoring relationships with students.
- Any additional duties as assigned by the Head of School.
Requirements
Applicants must:
- have a degree in theater, music, or a related field;
- have relevant teaching experience; and
- demonstrate a deep understanding of and support for the respective missions of GPS and McCallie.
Additional qualifications or characteristics desired, but not required, include:
- Experience in teaching students the various skills and characteristics needed in plays and musicals, especially at the middle school and high school level;
- Experience in directing, producing and/or leading plays and musicals, especially at the middle school and high school level;
- Experience as a classroom teacher and/or school roles, especially at a middle school or high school;
- A commitment to lifelong learning;
- Flexibility; and
- Collaboration
