Job Title: Assistant Sailing Coach/Teacher
Supervisor: Athletic Director/Upper School Head
Start Date: August 2023
General Summary: Severn School is searching for an assistant sailing coach beginning in August of 2023. For qualified candidates, this position has the opportunity to be combined with teaching or another full time role on campus. Severn School has an active, competitive sailing team, with full varsity and JV programs, complete with 12 420's, 6 FJ's, and 3 coach boats. Our team sails in local events, and is consistently competitive at the national level. The team sails at our own venue on the Magothy River in Severna Park, about 3 miles from campus, and sails competitively in the fall and spring seasons. The Coach will work with 2 other coaches and help develop new sailors, along with coaching top youth sailors in fleet racing and team racing.
Essential Functions: Instruction at Severn starts with relationships and emphasizes the importance of understanding, connections, and teamwork in order to create a learning environment that promotes both achievement and inclusivity. The Severn faculty is a community of learners committed to ongoing professional development, reflection, collaboration, and collegiality, and a premium is placed on the development and employment of intentional teaching, learning, and assessment methods. Severn believes that all aspects of a student’s experience, including but not limited to leadership training, service, clubs, the advisory program, athletics, and the arts, are necessary components of a Severn education. Faculty participation in these pursuits beyond the classroom reflects the collective commitment to living the school’s deep-rooted mission, which promises that students are known and valued.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a strong background in competitive sailing and coaching. Candidates interested in a full time role at the school should be able to teach an Upper School subject, will have a strong educational background with a degree in a related field, and will possess a steadfast commitment to the life of the school beyond the classroom. Severn’s faculty is a foundational component of our commitment to fostering a culture of belonging, and so candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
How to Apply: Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume, and a list of at least three references to Steve Soden, Upper School Head, at s.soden@severnschool.com
