Founded in 1774, Newark Academy has a rich history as an independent, coeducational school, for grades 6-12, located on a beautiful 68-acre campus in Livingston, NJ. The mission of Newark Academy is to “contribute to the world engaged individuals instilled with a passion for learning, a standard of excellence, and a generosity of spirit.”
The Newark Academy Teaching Fellows program provides recent college graduates who are aspiring educators with the opportunity to develop their professional craft under the guidance of Newark Academy’s master teachers. The one-year program includes a foundation of experiences and mentorships in and out of the classroom that are designed to introduce Fellows to the teaching profession and to support them as they begin their careers. The program further aims to expand the pool of educators in independent schools by encouraging and welcoming Fellows from diverse backgrounds.
For the 2023-2024 school year, Newark Academy seeks two Fellows, one to teach primarily in Math, Science, and/or Health and the other to teach primarily in Arts, English, Humanities, and/or Language. Fellows have three primary roles:
- Teacher: Fellows teach one section of a course. As classroom teachers, Fellows are responsible for preparing lessons, collaborating with colleagues, and meeting school guidelines regarding grading, recordkeeping, and the use of the learning management system. Fellows are mentored by other teachers in their department and by the Department Chair.
- Substitute Teacher / Student Supervisor. The Dean of Faculty and division principals call upon Fellows to substitute teach and/or cover supervisory duties as needed.
- Coach/Activity Leader. Fellows assist in leading one significant extracurricular activity (e.g. coaching a sport, helping with the winter musical, assisting with DEI student programs).
Fellows are supervised by the Director of Studies and will have opportunities for mentorship and job search support from the Newark Academy administration. Fellows are invited to participate in department meetings, faculty meetings, on-campus faculty professional development programs, and employee affinity groups. While the Fellows program begins in late August and ends in mid June, Fellows may be invited to participate in the Newark Academy Summer Session as teaching assistants before the start of the program.
Successful candidates will be excited to immerse themselves in a diverse and academically rigorous school community. They will also be enthusiastic learners themselves and dedicated to supporting the academic and social-emotional development of adolescents.
