The Speyer Legacy School, the only independent K-8 school for gifted learners in New York City, seeks a Director of Secondary School Placement. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, data-driven, flexible, organized, collaborative, professional, proactive, strategic, and must exhibit an enthusiasm for working with students, families, and colleagues. They must have excellent written communication and presentation skills, the ability to be innovative, a willingness to go above and beyond, and a sense of humor. This individual should possess a strong professional network and demonstrate a deep understanding of New York City area high schools, as well as top boarding and day schools across the country, as they engage within the community and advocate for our students. Our approach to secondary school placement is highly personalized, as we help each student determine their “right fit” high school. Concurrently, the Director of Secondary School Placement manages our small, but growing database of alumni, and, with the input of our Advancement Office, initiates outreach and maintains relationships with Speyer graduates and their families. This is a full-time, 12-month position. The Director of Secondary School Placement reports to the Director of Enrollment Management.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Partner with the Director of Enrollment Management to plan and set goals for the
placement process and admissions season - Lead, manage, and evaluate the high school placement program
- Provide exceptional service to Middle School families while building relationships to ensure an individualized process
- Build and deepen relationships with high school admissions directors to understand their program, culture, and process, and, likewise, for them to continue to “know” Speyer
- Support all test prep and admissions testing; liaise with the Director of Enrollment Management to facilitate funding for families/students who require this support
- Schedule and coordinate the mock interview process with Middle School students
- Collaborate with a wide variety of faculty and staff as follows:
- Head of Middle School for the development of student profiles
- Classroom teachers and advisors to obtain letters of recommendation
- Registrar to collect record requests and transcripts
- Middle School staff to coordinate schedules and support for students
- Share information with the community beginning in 6th grade to plan for high school
- Schedule and coordinate visits from high school admissions directors and placement officers
- Inform Middle School families of the high school recruitment programs and events
- Report and analyze placement data to track trends for the Director of Enrollment Management
- Prepare Middle School placement statistics
- Build and maintain relationships with alumni
- Plan and host engagement events for alumni
- Uphold the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism
- Perform additional duties as assigned: including, but not limited to participation in professional development, school-wide events, admissions events, and admissions committee meetings
Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; master’s degree preferred
- Minimum of five years experience in independent school admissions
- Ability to manage ambiguity and multiple priorities in an autonomous environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and the desire to work as a member of a team
- Flexibility, adaptability, and creativity
- Superb oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational and project management skills
- Initiative, leadership, and tenacity
- Experience working with Google Workspace, along with school information systems such as Ravenna and Veracross
Salary Range
- $80,000-$90,000. Placement in the range is to commensurate with experience.
