Title: Lower School Librarian
Reports to: Head Lower School Librarian
Job Status: Full-time beginning in the 2023-24 school year; Exempt
Job Summary: 'Iolani School is seeking a service-oriented, nurturing, and knowledgeable individual to join the Lower School (K-6) Library team. The Lower School Librarian will support the Head Lower School Librarian in library instruction, collections, programming, services, and operations at ‘Iolani School’s Lower School Library.
The Lower School Library is an inviting and interactive space, and the hub of the Lower School. Through library instruction, access to resources, and partnership with the Head Lower School Librarian and Lower School Literacy Coach, the Lower School Librarian will guide and encourage students to become effective users of information and develop a love of reading. The implementation of the Units of Study in Reading and Writing is a curricular priority in the Lower School and knowledge of the Units is preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain a warm, nurturing, and inclusive library space that encourages learning, reading, inquiry, and collaboration
- Teach Lower School library classes
- Collaborate with the Head Lower School Librarian, Lower School faculty, and Director of Library Services to develop and implement a library curriculum that empowers students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, curators, and ethical users of information
- Partner with the Head Lower School Librarian to manage the Lower School Library collection, reading widely and actively collaborating with library staff and faculty in the selection and weeding of print, non-print, and electronic resources that support curriculum and independent reading; help to ensure that the library collection is current, relevant, and diverse
- Support the Head Lower School Librarian in the purchasing, processing, cataloging, and promotion of library materials
- Support Lower School Library operations
- Assist with integrated library system (ILS) administration and management of other digital resources
- Create instructional resources using LibGuides and other platforms
- Suggest books and other resources to Lower School students, faculty, and families to support curricular and research needs, independent reading, and lifelong learning
- Develop, manage, and promote library events and programs for the Lower School community
- Other duties as determined by the Head Lower School Librarian, Director of Library Services, and the Dean of Lower School
Qualification Requirements:
- Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program, or equivalent School Librarian certification
- Experience working with children in a library setting, preferably a school library
- Teaching experience, K-6 preferred
- Experience with use and administration of integrated library systems (ILS) preferred
- Familiarity with Units of Study preferred
- Excellent interpersonal skills with students as well as adults
- Ability to handle interruptions and multiple demands
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
- Passionate about promoting the love of libraries, reading, and lifelong learning
- Proficient in Google applications as well as a willingness and ability to learn new technologies and methodologies that support school libraries
- Commitment to ongoing professional development
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Ability to see and hear within normal parameters with or without correction; full leg and arm mobility (walking, ability to access overhead shelves); full range of head, neck, and back movement; and unrestricted ability to bend knees, raise arms above the head, and to move hands, fingers, and wrist
- Ability to lift, carry and/or move up to 30 pounds without difficulty
- Ability to sit for extended periods; and ability to stand and/or walk for sustained periods of time
- Due to work in close proximity to children, must pass fingerprinting and background clearance checks
- TB clearance required
