The Plant Manager will be responsible for the smooth operation of the total campus with focus on executing day to day repair and maintenance of the plant, improving facilities, and analyzing the operation of the campus. This position will support the overall strategic vision for the School as established by the School’s administration and trustees. The Plant Manager must provide appropriate and respectful management and direction to a staff of skilled professionals.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the development of an evolving plan to address routine and recurring maintenance, repair, and enhancing the plant. This plan will drive long-term financial planning and the budget process.
- Oversee the development of an evolving plan to perform preventative maintenance for all interior and exterior spaces on campus.
- Lead the execution of a long-term plan, to be developed in partnership with the School’s Administrative Team, Trustees, engineers, and other experts, to address deferred maintenance concerns including projects to replace and/or renew all structures, components and systems of the infrastructure that are critical to campus operations.
- Manage and develop facility projects, both renovation and new construction, to support the school’s long-term strategic plan, from the initiation stage through planning, design and construction stages.
- Ensure that all new projects integrate strategic plan elements, including energy systems, sustainability, aesthetics, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Work closely with the Chief Athletic Officer on maintenance and upgrades to all athletic fields and buildings.
- Oversee the facilities and operations staff (including grounds, plumbing, electric) in performing their regular duties, or other duties as assigned.
- Collaborate with academic and staff leadership to understand how the facility can be improved to enhance the student experience (academics, performing arts, visual arts, spiritual life, residential life, athletics, student recreation, etc.)
- Continuously work with School leadership to determine how campus spaces are most effectively used.
- Work closely with the School’s Administrative Team and the Trustees’ Building and Grounds Committee to update the School’s master plan on a regular basis.
- Maintain a constant engagement with local officials, regulators, and third-party experts to ensure compliance in all areas (ex: zoning regulations, environmental, utilities, energy management, etc.).
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Facilities / Project Management or related degree, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ten (10) years of relevant experience.
- Experience and success in managing and leading a large team (more than 10 people).
- Thorough knowledge of building systems, pumps, motors, electrical systems, rough plumbing, rough and finish carpentry, grounds maintenance, and general operation of a large campus.
- Understanding of and experience with evolving technology (ex: WORD, EXCEL, GOOGLE, Work Order System [Brightly].)
- Open to providing and accepting professional feedback and discussion.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The position requires an extensive amount of walking around campus and through buildings, climbing stairs, and driving. The ability to be attentive and contribute during meetings with members of the community and project planning meetings is essential. Will work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
Additional Physical Requirements:
- Must have the ability to assist if needed in all areas of facilities operations.
- Moderate to heavy physical effort may be required, including helping on job sites.
- Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs. on occasion, and frequently lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to crawl, climb ladders, twist, turn, and reach in completing job duties.
- Ability to work outside in hot or cold conditions for extended periods of time.
- Ability to operate vehicles and various machines/equipment.
