MIDDLE SCHOOL ADVENTURE AND WELLNESS TEACHER
Our Mission is to inspire and develop courageous leaders who think independently, work collaboratively, learn joyfully, and champion change.
We seek a full-time Adventure and Wellness teacher starting August 2023. At Seattle Girls’ School*, we use an experiential, joy-filled, inquiry-based approach. We seek teachers who are collaborative, flexible, and love learning and doing alongside middle school girls and gender nonconforming students. Teachers work collaboratively to write original curriculum (no textbooks here!) that is project-based and hands-on, and integrates anti-bias work into everything they do.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Engage students in differentiated and meaningful learning through culturally responsive teaching practices.
- Build upon the existing curriculum to provide motivating and relevant learning experiences for middle school girls and gender nonconforming students, including physical fitness, health, and sex education.
- Design and engage students in lessons, projects, and challenges that include an emphasis on team building, self- and social-awareness, self-advocacy, and communication.
- Participate in a grade team by collaborating daily with grade level teachers to support interdisciplinary curriculum and logistics, including scheduling, events, trips (including a multi-day overnight trip), and student concerns.
- Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, providing academic support and integrating social-emotional, anti-bias, and social justice learning based on shared grade-team goals.
- Provide meaningful ongoing assessment and feedback to support student growth, and partner effectively with families.
- Write progress reports for each student at the end of each evaluation period.
- Beyond your curricular responsibilities, actively engage around the larger mission of SGS to develop students’ leadership and their understanding of social justice.
- Model a growth mindset by learning alongside students and colleagues.
- Engage in continuous personal identity development work, specifically in regards to race and privilege, and support students in their own learning.
- Provide a safe and active environment that will benefit each SGS student.
- Other duties as needed.
Qualifications:
- B.A./B.S. is required.
- WA State Teaching Certification, or Master’s Degree is preferred.
- Two or more years of experience working with youth or instructing students in a classroom setting is a plus.
- A high level of cultural competence, and sensitivity to the needs of middle school-aged girls and gender nonconforming students.
Compensation:
Salary and benefit package commensurate with experience. The annual salary range for our faculty is $64,000-$85,000. SGS uses a salary scale that takes years of experience and degrees attained into account. All faculty are compensated according to the scale and dependent on those two data points.
