Job Description
Reporting to the Associate Head of School, the Head of Middle School holds comprehensive responsibility for all aspects of the education of students in grades six through eight. A dynamic and enthusiastic member of the leadership team, this individual is responsible for developing, reviewing, and maintaining a culture and educational program that foster a rich learning environment and deepen the sense of belonging for each member of our learning community.
The Head of Middle School is the educational leader of the Middle School who oversees its day-to-day operations and works closely with the Department Chairs to establish and maintain a strong and supportive academic program and to encourage growth and creativity among a deeply dedicated faculty. This skilled leader fosters positive relationships among parents, students, and teachers and dedicates themselves to our core principles of character, educational vigor, diversity, and community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the academic leaders of the school to review, direct, and maintain the overall Middle School student experience, including academics, the arts, and athletics
- Oversee and direct the daily activities of Middle School students to provide stimulating and educational experiences, including community service, trips, assemblies, and social events
- Conduct regular faculty meetings that deal with both routine school matters and the stimulating exchange of ideas on issues of educational/philosophical interest and concern
- Observe, supervise, and assist in the evaluation and professional development of the Middle School faculty and staff, helping all employees to reach their highest potential and professional goals
- Support the Department Chairs in their function as professionals who are responsible for implementing the rigorous and innovative curriculum of the Academy
- Prepare a master schedule and work in conjunction with Department Chairs in course assignments and obligations
- Work closely with the Class Deans to support an advisory system, develop effective student leadership opportunities, and handle disciplinary issues
- Serve as an integral member of the Student Support Team to address student academic, social, and emotional concerns
- Consult with and mentor teachers in matters of classroom management, pedagogy, equity and inclusion, and general school procedures
- Establish and maintain guidelines for proper student conduct and dress, student discipline, adherence to established rules, and accurate records of behavior and attendance
- Make recommendations to the Associate Head of School regarding the hiring, retention, and assignment of faculty
- Assist in the enrollment and admission process for the attraction, retention, and evaluation of applicants
Qualifications
- Education: Undergraduate and Advanced degrees are required
- Work Experience: Minimum of five years experience in a relevant position that includes work with children in this age group, including teaching, administrative and supervisory experience, and student advising
- Communication Skills: Superb written and oral communication skills that capture and effectively communicate the school’s mission to all constituencies and that enrich the school’s culture
- Interpersonal Skills: Superior interpersonal skills, the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, faculty, and other members of the school community in a way that is reflective of the school’s culture and to project professional competence, leadership capability, discretion, judgment and personal maturity
- Leadership: Proven track record as a leader of faculty, students, and programs in independent schools, including creating a caring, dynamic culture for students, faculty /staff, and families
