Kindergarten Lead Teacher
Doane Academy seeks a Kindergarten teacher to join our school beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. The Kindergarten teacher will have the opportunity to bring our mission to life as they develop and deliver an inclusive curriculum that stokes curiosity and inspires a love of learning. With a “whole child” approach to teaching and a deep knowledge of developmentally appropriate practice, the Kindergarten teacher builds students’ social-emotional skills while developing their knowledge of and empathy for the diversity of human experience. The teacher is responsible for teaching the subject areas of reading, writing, word study, social studies, and math. A strong background in the following curricula is preferred: Math in Focus, TCRWP reading and writing workshop, Wilson’s FUNdations, and Responsive Classroom.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Positively support the school’s mission while managing the demands of curriculum and lesson planning, teaching, collaboration, and parent communications.
- Establish and enact community norms with students, using a positive, asset-based approach to classroom management.
- Develop and implement both long-term and short-term curriculum plans.
- Consistently communicate and document clear objectives for all learning activities; differentiate among students with methods that provide appropriate challenge and support.
- Regularly assess student progress by observing and evaluating performance and development and providing appropriate, individualized feedback to students and their families.
- Work collaboratively with a team of dedicated colleagues; communicate regularly with colleagues about student progress.
- Write narrative student evaluation reports two times in the year (January and June) and lead parent-teacher conferences three times in the year (August, October, and March).
- Attend school, department, team and parent meetings.
- Maintain knowledge of and competency in relevant classroom technology and have a passion for recent developments in pedagogy and curriculum, displaying openness and flexibility to incorporate changes into instructional plans and activities.
- Be vigilant about student health and safety.
- Supervise any assistant teachers or other support personnel assigned to the classroom; provide necessary instruction and training for those assisting in the classroom environment.
- Represent the program and the school in a proactive, positive and knowledgeable manner to prospective families; assist in the assessment of children and families who apply to the program.
Qualifications and Skills
- BA degree required; concentration in early childhood education preferred.
- At least 3-5 years in a lead teacher role.
- Independent school experience is a plus.
- Demonstrated commitment to meeting the social-emotional needs of children.
- A clear, warm, and effective communicator.
- Experience with technology integration is strongly preferred.
- A proven commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is required.
- Candidates should display a growth mindset toward student learning, teaching practice, and personal/collective professional development.
