Christchurch School is a co-ed Episcopal boarding and day school serving grades 9—12. Founded in 1921, Christchurch is located on a 125-acre waterfront campus on the Rappahannock River in Virginia. Position Overview. Christchurch seeks a part-time Assistant Sailing Coach. We are looking for people who foster an inclusive workplace built on equitable policies and procedures, and who are also able to engage a diverse team of co-workers and students. Christchurch is regularly one of the top teams in the country, attracting high-level sailors from the US and abroad. Moreover, Christchurch has one of the longest streaks of qualifying for Nationals of any high school in the country and hopes to add a high-level sailing coach to help its growing team. Christchurch won the 2019 Team Racing National Championship and multiple District level regattas. Almost all Christchurch sailors go on to sail in top college programs.
The ideal candidate will have college sailing experience and prior coaching experience and help foster a team culture of improving daily. This position reports to the Director of Athletics and the Head Sailing Coach & Waterfront Director.
Duties
- Assist in running and coaching daily Varsity sailing practice in both the Fall And Spring
- Planning practice and curriculum for a highly competitive sailing team.
- Daily Chalk Talks and debriefs on the water drills.
- Regatta Prep for home and away regattas
- Coach at weekend regattas, both League and District Events. Christchurch also has many students who sail in several different One Design boats, so experience in multiple fleets is preferred.
- Assist in managing the Sailing fleet, which consists of the following:
- 21 - FJs
- 18- Varsity 420s
- 9 JV 420s
- 6 C420s
- Multiple other Lasers, Sunfish, etc.
- Work with the Admissions team
- Communicate with Sailors and Parents
- Is organized, flexible, and willing to adjust to what is needed for the sailors and program overall
- Interface with high-performing Christchurch student athletes respectfully and professionally
- Assist Head Coach with running a successful Varsity sailing team
Additional Opportunities: In addition to coaching, applicants may also apply to be involved in other aspects of the School. Examples may include teaching, administration, residential life etc.

- Ability to handle all physical demands of being the Assistant Varsity Sailing Coach
- Ability to be mobile around campus and buildings

We are forty-five minutes from Williamsburg (home of the College of William and Mary), and one hour from both Richmond and the Hampton Roads area. With a student population of 220 and a teaching faculty of 30, the atmosphere on campus is collegial, friendly, personal, and above all, community-oriented.
80% of faculty members and their families live on campus, where housing includes utilities. Faculty families are welcome for all regular meals when school is in session. Resident and non-resident members of the faculty participate in the full life of the school-from morning assembly and chapel to classroom and after-school activities, athletics, residential life oversight and weekend activities, as well as special events and awards ceremonies.
The standard load carried by faculty members is 4 classes, 2 co-curricular seasons or the equivalent, and rotating dorm duty.
