Position Summary
Detroit Country Day School seeks an Upper School Interim French Teacher starting immediately. A successful candidate must have affection for students in this age group, an understanding of their needs and energy, and a willingness to work collaboratively with employees, administration and parents.
This posting is for a full-time interim teaching position, reporting to the Upper School Director. The position is for one year with the possibility of continuing (full-time) status.
Primary Responsibilities
- Primary duties include teaching French I, II, and III and contributing to the learning community in other meaningful ways.
- Provide innovative, comprehensive, student-centered and content-rich instruction designed to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Employ a range of teaching strategies and support students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
- Instill in students an appreciation for the French language as well as the cultures of Francophone countries.
- Create and manage a caring, supportive, purposeful, and stimulating environment conducive to student’s learning.
- Identify clear teaching objectives and learning outcomes, with appropriate challenges and high expectations.
- Nurture an inclusive environment in which all students can participate fully and have a sense of belonging.
- Organize and manage groups or individual pupils reflecting all abilities, ensuring differentiation of learning needs.
- Plan opportunities to develop students’ social, emotional, and cultural awareness.
- Maintain a regular system of monitoring, assessment, record-keeping, and reporting of student’s progress.
- Contribute to the development and coordination of the department’s curriculum.
- Communicate and consult with parents over all aspects of their children’s education – academic, social, and emotional.
- Recognize health and safety are responsibilities of every employee, take responsible care of self and others, and comply with the school health and safety policies and any specific procedures/rules that might apply to this position.
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in French; advanced degree preferred
- Teaching certificate not necessary but favorably considered
- Experience teaching French vocabulary, culture and grammar to 9th-12th grade students
- Proficient and enthusiastic user of technology.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Professional collegiality, a desire to grow, and enthusiasm for young people.
- Preference to candidates with a willingness to lead student activities/clubs.

The Detroit Country Day Upper School offers a strong and varied program that provides numerous opportunities for students to demonstrate their individual strengths and develop their potential. The rigorous college-preparatory program, which includes Honors and Advanced Placement courses in each discipline in addition to a diverse selection of electives, prepares students for college and beyond.
