Position Summary: The Haverford School is seeking to enrich our student-centered and inclusive teaching community with a teacher who is excited to teach introductory or advanced physics, engineering, and/or other science courses. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic individual who has demonstrated a passion for science learning and for teaching that builds interest in, excitement for, and mastery of the subject. They will have a willingness to design and implement opportunities for authentic, experiential learning and assessment in the classroom. They will also be a collaborator with teachers of the same course as well as those in the greater department and whole school, seeking out opportunities for interdisciplinary engagement. Finally, the candidate must possess a willingness to become an active member of the school community beyond the classroom through advising, co-curricular activities, coaching, and/or advising students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach four sections of science courses. Course assignments will be determined by the candidate’s strengths, but will include some combination of introductory (freshmen) physics and advanced physics. Additional courses, including engineering and/or courses in other scientific disciplines, may be considered depending on expertise.
- Meet the expectations of teachers at the Haverford School
- Collaborate effectively and frequently with colleagues throughout the school.
- Plan, evaluate, and revise course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
- Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
- Design, evaluate and grade student work, assignments, papers, and examinations.
- Prepare and supervise safe laboratory experiences for students.
- Advise students on academic and other matters in accordance with the schools’ mission.
- Participate in the school’s evaluation and professional development programs.
- Contribute to the life of the school and school community
- Advise and supervise students during the school day.
- Coach an athletic team and/or advise an extracurricular activity.
- Participate in infrequent evening or weekend activities, including meetings, professional development, etc.
- Possess a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and the implementation of those principles in independent schools
- Other duties, as assigned
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in science or related subjects.
- Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing with colleagues and parents.
- Enthusiastic interest in teaching, motivating, coaching, and mentoring high school boys.
- Ability to meet the obligations of a standard workweek, including co-curricular responsibilities that may be before or after the normal daily or weekly schedule, as required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Works in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
- May work at a desk and computer for an extended period of time.
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 15 lbs.
- Works primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment and intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
